Lets talk about how the Devils are slipping on some quality defense. I guess no news is good news. I'm going drinking. |

Defense is going to be a problem all year, but we know this already. Shero knows this, and also knew there was no real help in this years FA class. Unless he pulls off some trades, we will be all-in during next years FA to grab some defense, if they make it to FA. Hopefully Santini, Mueller, and Severson all develop this year and we can have a surprising team. That said, at best we are a bubble team, and at worst...Rasmus Dahlin! |

The issues with this year's free agent defenders seem pretty typical of every year. I don't see how next year is better; although admittedly I don't know off hand who will be available then.
Franson, Oduya, Markov, Polak and the rest of the FA D certainly have their flaws but considering we are one of the worst D's in the game you'd think someone would help. My guess is if we do anything it'll be the ultra cheap PTO route although Johnny Oduya signing today for one year and like $1M looks like a nice deal.
Also, I'm surprised we can't get anything done with Vegas who seem to have a lot of defenders...
I feel like the plan is just play it out this year with the D and try to get lucky in the draft again. |

Quick trade thought ? With DET signing tater, if shero can get nyquist and also take green off their hands, would you guys be willing to go forward with the trade |

Mike Green is their best defenseman and has one year left. Nyquist is also ~50 point per year player coming off of his worst year shooting percentage wise. I'd expect him to rebound.
Why would they trade these players? |

Vegas already moved Schlemko, Emelin and Methot. We just missed the boat. |

it's obvious we're not trying to win a Cup this year. it's also obvious no one outside of Shattenkirk would be worth the salt moving forward. It seems to be also obvious that Shero is content letting this season bring what it may. Santini, Kapla, *22-year old* Severson, will all get playing time. The young forwards will get prime playing time.
this is a development year. Ray did well bringing in Johansson. Boyle I could take or leave. I'd rather guys learn from a Jagr than a Boyle but whatever.
If the young players learn amidst the losing (learning experiences), they should improve individually, and we should get a top 10 pick.
it's a win/win. I think next year we make more moves and try to contend for a playoff spot. I think they want to see what we have with those young guys on D and O before making any big name signings or trades. |

Maybe, but we've seen enough of the D to know what we are getting in everyone except Mueller and Kapla; and it seems unrealistic to think either of those two are going to transform the D into respectability. Season is going to be bringing us a lot of goals against with this crew...

idk. i wana see another year out of young Severson. I definitely want to see more from Santini. He's had 39gp, 38 last year.. only being -6. Idk the competition he was against, or his zone starts, but -6 could've been worse.
as they say, dmen take more time to develop. |

Severson is 3 months younger than Jaccob Slavin.
Though in fairness to him he's in a very similar spot to where Faulk was at the same age. |

Totally agree these guys are likely to improve and further develop. Just saying realistically we still need of defensive help. |

Severson has not shown his true potential yet, Santini still has a lot of promise could be a solid top 4 D one day and Kapla showed some promise last years when the time comes I expect Shero to make a trade for a #1 defenseman most likely next offseason or the year after depending on how our forward prospects develop |

XM hockey program said yesterday 'hands down NJ has the worst defensive core in the league' and they were hopeful Mueller could make the jump to the NHL and not real confident on how much he can contribute. Just saying this could be ugly. |

There has to be a pending move. I wish they would get on with it. This D is bad, but the lack of depth is what is scary. If Severson or Greene go down we have Lovejoy or Moore on the first pairing. This just can't be the lineup for this year. Something has got to give. There has to be someone or an option like Markov or Franson who can keep us at the very least consistently bad and not go from bad to absolutely awful if anything happens. |

Shero will bring in a veteran, if not two. This will not be the defense to start the year. |
