How is bringing a camera into a bathroom the same thing as having a woman dressed as a dude in the stall next to you?
I don't see any correlation there at all.... |

You're trying to explain the nuances of chromosomal development to a guy who still thinks the refs are out to get the Hawks because of Lysiak. Sisyphus comes to mind .... - Hank_Greenberg
Lol yeah, probably a pointless discussion. It's just always weird to me that people believe info is limited to what they learned in grade school. Like they could fit in everything about human biology in a single semester or even 4 years worth of a class is baffling to me. I mean, I took decently advanced calculus well into my master's program, but that doesn't mean I know everything about math - hell, non-homogeneous PDEs are my kryptonite. |

You realize it wasn't the NHL or any sports that made it an issue, right? It was certain lawmakers who suddenly decided it was an issue despite the fact that it wasn't ever in the past. The sports and entertainment orgs are just reacting to those laws.
The excuse of 'protecting women and kids' is bs too - transgender people have been using their identifed bathrooms for decades and it was never an issue before. There are far more cases of transgender people being attacked that the reverse in bathrooms (if any for the latter). There also has been no spike in assaults in bathrooms in any city/state/district that had non-discriminatory laws, debunking the idea that suddenly men dressed as women would enter bathrooms to attack women or vice versa. Maine has had such has had gender identity protections in its state civil rights law for more than 11 years and they haven't had a single incident of either a transgender person attacking someone or someone pretending to be transgender doing so on record. Why create a law to supposedly correct a problem that doesn't exist and shows no signs of existing in the future?
The fact that over 200 national, state and local organizations across the U.S. that work with sexual assault and domestic violence survivors strongly objecting such bathroom laws should tell you all you need to know. The people making the fuss over gender identities are those who are disconnected from the facts. So it's lawmakers who made it an issue, not sports orgs. Sports orgs are just reacting to it.
Honestly, I don't get it. Live and let live. - L_B_R
Not exactly, it was more their reaction to change: 2012-13: A growing movement to install gender-neutral bathrooms at university campuses. During this period, 150 university campuses installed gender-neutral bathrooms, along with a growing number of high schools. The movement for gender-inclusive bathrooms in public facilities started at least as early as 2009 in the state of Vermont. Interesting read:

Easy, both should not be allowed to enter the room. (Men or camaras in womens bathrooms). What's so hard to understand about that? |

IIRC, August 15 is when draftees like Butcher (and like Vesey last year) can sign with another team, so there's something to look forward to in seeing where he signs and fill in the news void.
Are there any other draftees in the same boat who the Hawks are interested in?
Welcome, and happy posting! |

Thanks AEL. Look forward to August 15. Hopefully Butcher will sign with the Hawks. The blue line looks pretty sparse. I pray that Murphy will end up as the next Brent Burns but I've seen enough Anders Erikksons, Patrick Poulins and Andrei Nikolishins as replacements for Blackhawk stars. Even Zhamnov was a big disappointment.
I started lurking around 2010 but since I lived in Japan, I couldn't register on the site because they have to send you a text message to complete the registration. Now that I'm back in the Chicago area, I can finally register... And I did. Awww yeah!!! |

It's the 16th, isn't it? The team holds their right through the 15th and they can sign with anyone the next day.
There are a few more NCAA guys about to be FA but none all that high profile. |

Will Butcher, the 2017 Hobey Baker Award winner from the University of Denver, has officially decided to hit the market as an unrestricted free agent Aug. 15, BSN Denver can reveal.
“We informed the Avalanche of that decision,” Butcher’s agent, Brian Bartlett, told BSN Denver. “We appreciate what Colorado has done, and we’re not ruling out the Avalanche as a potential destination. But we just feel there will be other opportunities that should be explored too, and therefore we’re going (to the 15th).” |

The CBA is weirdly worded, as always.
If a Player drafted at age 18 or 19, who had received a Bona Fide Offer in accordance with Section 8.6(a)(ii) above, becomes a bona fide college student prior to the second June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft and remains a bona fide college student through the graduation of his college class, his drafting Club shall retain the exclusive rights of negotiation for his services through and including the August 15 following the graduation of his college class.
Bolded makes it seem they have his rights until the 15th, but I've read it quoted a bunch that he can start talking to teams that day too. Maybe it's like noon or something? I just remember Vesey signed on the 16th. |

No. The nhl is making it an issue. The league is saying, "we don't respect the people of Texas and their ability to govern themselves. Our opinion on this issue is so deep that we will consider punishing the people of Texas by moving the draft out of your state so that you reap no monetary benefit from our gatering."
I say, take your crappy ass draft and stick it. Who do you think you are, the nba?
So, it was not an issue. The league made it an issue. It was the furthest thing from my mind.

In today's Athletic, Powers says that Bondra - at 20 - will return to the Prince George Cougars in the WHA next season.
What progression is likely for a 20 year old in junior hockey playing against 16-18 year olds?
And - what is the age limit for the juniors?
Powers also says that Jokijarju may miss training camp because of his knee injury - he would return directly to Portland when healed. - StLBravesFan

They have that right, though.
They can say "You know what? This is bullpoop and we want to make sure you know we think so." and pull their event. It's a shame that it's come to it, but they also don't want to look complacent when they've worked so hard on their message of inclusion and partnerships with YouCanPLay |

Do a majority of people in Texas approve of the law or is it an issue to specific people? Because that's how it was in North Carolina - the people didn't want it or didn't care as a majority and they ended up electing a different governor as a result. Same thing in GA, which is why when the Governor vetoed it, people went about their business and life as usua; - because it's not an issue to be non-discriminatory towards transgender people until lawmakers decided it was. So just because someone got elected doesn't mean the majority of people of that city/state/whatever agree with all the proposed laws that person comes up with.
Not that it's really about that - the elected officials of Texas have a right to make an issue about bathrooms and then the NHL has a right to react to that them making it an issue by taking their business elsewhere. No offense, I'm not sure what your anecdotal awareness of the issue is relevant: just because you suddenly know about it, that it's suddenly on your mind, because it may impact hockey does not mean it wasn't an issue before the NHL reacted. There are protests, lawsuits, opposing bills, etc etc happening as a result of these laws so the issue with them existed before the NHL commented on it. You also don't have to follow it - just ignore people talking about it, scroll past the posts, only care about the draft location once it actually happens, etc etc.
So yeah, it's still not the NHL making it an issue - they're reacting to the issue that already exists. And again, it's their right to determine where their brand goes. They're not forcing Texas to do anything - they've just presented a course of action they will take and now Texas can decide if they care. Same way NC and GA did.
Anyway, we don't have to agree on this, I just thought I'd explain the way I see it as clearly as possible before I leave the subject alone. Thanks for being civil about a discussion that can be anything but. |

Why wouldn't he want to be in Rockford? - hocktock
Last note of this blog before moving on - Bondra does want to be in Rockford, he just wasn't offered an ELC by the Hawks or an AHL contract. They have a lot of forwards in Rockford this year so not a lot of room for him, so the Hawks opted to wait since they own his rights for two more years. The Powers article mentioned how he had been hoping the Hawks would still give him a contract this year, but he's fine with waiting as well and the Hawks were interested in signing him next year. |
