I think that's an over reaction. Manning is a serviceable #6 Defenseman. These are all 20-23 year old kids. If they need more time in the minors, they'll get it. - Baxter27
I don't see Manning as anything more than a #7 who was forced into a role because our defense was abysmal. If 2 of our highly-prized prospects isn't better than him, especially the ones who have 2 and 3 years of AHL experience, I will be worried. |

Wonder if the Flyers decide to bring in some veteran forwards as well. Here is a guy I've been eyeing for a bit. Could make it interesting and get the rookies to step up their game.
Last four years stats:
250 GP
17 G
28 A
45 PTS

And I see much bigger concerns then Manning potentially being the #6 defenseman. Just because they've spent 2-3 years in the AHL does not mean they have reached their peak NHL readiness. Also, even if Morin or Hagg flop and never reach the NHL, it's not the worth worrying about. |

I think Manning can be a decent full time #6 defenseman in this league. |

Peak NHL readiness and "better than Brandon Manning" are 2 completely different things.
And yes, if Morin and Hagg both flop and never reach the NHL, that will be quite a hit, as Morin was expected be our premier shutdown NHL defenseman among out group of D prospects. |

If your talking about Jagr, I don't want him.
I want our players playing in the top 6 minutes and all those PP and tough situations. And if you have Jagr, he isn't going to play in your bottom 6 and he will take PP time away.
I would just rather have guys like Konecny, Lindblom, Patrick, Weal play those situations.

The same way that Andrew MacDonald is a slightly (if at all) overpaid top-4 defenseman, I'm sure. |

No, pretty sure it's VandeVelde and he's just being an bumhole. That whole "trust of 2 NHL coaches" is the calling card. |

To be fair, that assessment was also based on the may the game was played a few years back...not today's speedy transition game. I still think he will be fine with his first pass and skating, he'll just never be more than a second pair hammer at best and probably a top PK guy. |

Which is fine. I predicted a top-4 shutdown player who can excel on the PK. Also, Bill's posted clips of him using his reach and size to catch up to speedier players, with Duclair coming to mind specifically. |

Disappointing for sure. But I'm not going to worry about it with Sanheim and Myers also in the pipe line. Premier shutdown NHL defenseman is already lofty expectations for Morin to live up to. Let's get him in the NHL first. |

I am not worried.
I think both Hagg and Morin will be fine. I actually feel that if the Flyers were worried you would have seen them bring in a veteran through FA. I know they talked about PTO for a vet defender but I think it's a little telling they didn't show more urgency to find one.
I think the Flyers have a good feel about their prospects. |

Exactly my point. - jmatchett383
My point was to measure expectations a little more reasonable. Making the NHL is the next milestone and with the depth of the farm system, some of these premier prospects may not reach it with the Flyers. Manning is getting disrespected after already accomplishing that, without being a premier prospect.
Do I hope Manning is the #7 defenseman and 2 or 3 rookies jump him on the depth chart? of course. I'm also not going to freak out if Manning and Macdonald earn spots in the starting line up. |

Not sure why people seem to keep bringing it up.
You can see now that the Flyers actually have depth in the system, they haven't even looked his way.
People need to realize he was basically a filler until they could fix the farm team and system depth |

If Manning and AMac earn those spots I'll be ok with it. But if it's close I want the kid playing since we already know what Manning and AMac bring to the table. |

I want the same thing. But not in the press box. That was my original point. A journey man defenseman should be invited to fill that role in case Manning and Macdonald are both in the starting line up. It will also send a clear message to the rookies that spots aren't being reserved for them. |

Maybe I am too optimistic but i don't think it will be long into the season for you to see a Provorov/Hagg top pair. Just think when it's all said and done you'll see something like below..unless there is a move made or Sanheim and Myers knock a defender out of the lineup.
Provorov - Hagg
MacDonald - Gudas
Morin - Gostisbehere
Manning |

I don't know if that's needed.
I think Hextall and the Flyers have been very clear that kids need to earn spots. |
