We are right by the white elephant pub. Just 2 min down the road. I have been known to leave my car there and stumble home on occasion

eichel about to get lots of love on hockey twitter today

TL;DR:

he has 1 secondary assist. that secondary assist is the only goal the sabres have scored while hes on the ice that jack wasnt the scorer or the primary assist.

that is (frank)ing insane

- robz228

source? I've been banging this drum for weeks now. hes something like third or fourth in the NHL in primary points.

I don't know this side of the game the way most here seem to but my understanding is that in those leagues the owners have all the leverage and the players are just trying to get as much of the "pie" as they can.

With the NHL being a gate driven league it seems inevitable that it will always result in some work stoppage cause the players seem to have far more power here and the owners clearly hate that.

- Sabresfan-365

Waaaayyyyy off regarding the MLB. You couldn't be more off regarding that.

What is the going rate for a 2nd round pick?

Does a 5th, 6th and 7th get a 2nd?

If it does, wouldn't that be worth it, considering we haven't drafted a useful player in those rounds since Paul Gaustad?

They say this every year, and it ends up rising like 1.5-2 mil.

more like later 2nd rd pick and a 3rd.

If you don't have a later 2nd rd pick then 3rd rd pick and a 2nd next year.

from anything i can find, based on success rates, thats pretty close, 2nd is maybe barely worth more than those 3 combined.

based on what a GM would do? no chance in hell.

You couldn't provide an explanation why? or does that undermine the responding like a d!ck approach lol

Literally started that with " i don't know the other side of the game" but it slipped my mind that the mlb doesn't have a salary cap structure

Bumble(frank) Bettman will screw this up. I think he wants to. This is the same guy who doesn't see that marketing value in the Olympics.
- Buffalo--Sabres

It's not that he doesn't see marketing value. It's that the owners don't feel that the benefits outweigh the costs. Besides, marketing for the league in the Olympics is vastly overstated. NHL TV viewership didn't increase materially after 2010 or 2014. People that watched it watch it only every four years, just like nobody watches Michael Phelps, Lindsey Vonn, Usain Bolt, Shaun White or whatever 16-20 year old Olympic gymnast darling except every four years.

It would be an interesting experiment if two GMs got to talking and said "for the next 4 years, we'll alternate trading a 2nd for a 5th, 6th and 7th, so we both have 2 cracks at each strategy"

Sports are so stodgy and risk-averse that it would never happen of course

Mike Rodak ESPN Staff Writer

Bills QB Tyrod Taylor will be limited in practice Friday and coach Sean McDermott on Friday called Taylor's availability a game-time decision Sunday. McDermott said it is possible that Taylor is active but is the backup because of his knee injury.

- homiedclown

I think the Bills are the only team in NFL history who are fully in the thick of a playoff race and their fans don't care. And this being in the middle of a 17 year playoff drought.

what measurement are you using. 2nd round pick comes out to something like 34-35% chance of playing 100 GP

round 5 is 14.6 %

Nobody actually believes they can make the playoffs, it's like Lucy pulling the football away from Charlie Brown, eventually you stop believing it can happen.

this, this this. So much this.

I'm so tired of hearing that the Olympics is good for the NHL.

You know what is good for the NHL? Better marketing, making your product easily accessible through TV deals, you know get multiple of those. Putting better games on TV. Marketing your stars.

I used to sell advertising. Here's the thing about advertising, if you expect your return to be tit for tat, you are a fool. Aggressive marketing is about ubiquity. Quickly name and eye doctor, a shoe store, an outdoor clothing store and an injury attorney. Chances are us Sabres fans fire off the name of the companies that advertise on MSG. When you are exposed to a product, most times the return isn't immediate, but it's about being in the contagiousness of the masses. And 2010 for example did a great job of that for USA and Canada hockey. The other sports you mentioned don't have professional leagues with 20,000 seat stadiums dotting the land and tv contracts.

My .02 cents.

Edit: Those business that didn't advertise or didn't see the value in advertising because they didn't want to cut the check today still exist. They just exist on a different level.

Other thought: NHL should be on ESPN for less money than NBC. Discuss among yourselves.

Here's the problem. It's not just 2010 and 2014. They've been in the Olympics since 1998. They haven't generated interest. The people interested in hockey continued to watch. The people that didn't continued to tune in every four years. And while the athletes I mentioned don't compete in leagues with TV contracts, they are highly endorsed by various companies and are millionaires. They also have a niche following, just like the NHL does. The Olympics doesn't change that. It never has, and never will.

As for your other thought, ESPN just laid off 150 people, after laying off another 400 earlier this spring. They paid way too much for Monday Night Football and the NBA, and had to cut costs elsewhere. The NHL would be just that, especially given its poor TV ratings.

It seems like the values are inflated to me in the later rounds, but at least interesting to see how they assign those values.
