Sanheim not being given a chance on PP2 is truly nuts when it's been terrible all season. I thought it was bad in 16-17, but this has been ridiculous. It's one thing to scratch him for defensive issues, but to not make use of his skating and offensive skills in the games where he did play leaves me nonplussed. (Note, nonplussed means bewildered, not unimpressed, although I am also unimpressed.)
Sanheim could easily perform the Voracek role if they used the PP1 formation. I wouldn't mind TK being left off PP2 if they needed the slot guy to be a lefty like Flip, Lehtera, Raffl or Scott Laughton who has the best wrist shot on the team but can't get a sniff of PP time.

I was hoping someone could comment on why certain players get called up from the AHL and others don't. Philip Varone is #3 in AHL scoring this year but I never hear anyone talk about him. Are some players just considered AHL regulars and won't get called up? Please forgive my ignorance I don't get to see the Phantoms play and I know next to nothing about the minor leagues. - SimmerDown17
Yes, guys like Varone and Brennan are career AHLers. |

Some guys can tear up lower tier leagues like the AHL but just don't have the tools for the NHL. If the AHL, the goalies aren't as good, the players are slower, the decision making window is longer, and the overall level of play is a step down. Sometimes a player is good enough to be able to take advantage of that, but can't hack it in the NHL (see: Akeson, Jason). Granted, I think some guys deserve a shot (see: Akeson, Jason), but they usually just become very good AHL players (see: Akeson, Jason). |

My best guess would be at least in the Flyers case is they don't often call up guys unless they are ready on the defensive side of the puck. Yes you can score goals put up points and you may get a taste (Martel) but if you are a one trick pony the ride wont last long. |

He is skilled enough to score with the time and space the AHL allows players a lot of times, but he cannot do it at the NHL level. Varone has gotten a shot before...I think he has played like 20 or 30 games in the NHL. He isn't good defensively either, that just doesn't matter much for the Phantom's AHL vets |

I suspect that they are trying to "keep things simple" for Sanheim and just work on his 5v5 game right now. I think he will get on PP2 eventually once they trust him enough to actually play. Then the points will come and everyone will think hes amazing even though he will play mostly the same.

Exactly. Varone has played in 50 NHL games and has 5 goals, 10 points and is -18. He really doesn't skate well enough to be a scorer at the NHL level and he's not a good defensive player either. At age 27, unless the team is just crushed by injuries, I doubt he ever sees another NHL game. |

Hypothetical question since she is a slow day in here... what IF someone offers up a good deal to acquire Simmonds no less than a first plus high end prospect (minors or nhl level) Would you then at the draft package up 2 of your 3 first round picks + D prospect of the teams choosing for first over all aka Dahlin? |

ups and downs of a season, it happens to all teams.
Bill, do you believe the Flyers will get better play out of their younger players in the second half of the season?
Patrick with what he learned and hoping improving from surgery and just gelling with the vets?
1st game is huge, confidence is a scary thing, beat the Devils and could bode well
great call out on Gene Hart, was amazing.
top 3 for me
Hart
Emmerick
Thorne - wcorvette
Not to date myself but Tom Mees was also great doing Hockey games.

I assume by D prospect of the other team's choosing, you aren't including Provorov?
Honestly, it's hard to say. For example, if the Flyers miss the playoffs and were to get lucky enough in the lottery to land the 2nd pick, I'm just going to take Svetchnikov and be happy.
One thing I might do, especially if they end up with 3 first rounders is see if I can move one of them in a deal to land a good young NHL player that fills a position of need. |

I'd rather try to use one of those 1st rounders to land a young NHL player.
Assuming the Flyers end up in the 10-14 range, the Blues will end up in the 22+ range, and the team trading for Simmonds would likely be in the 22+ range, I don't see anyone trading a potential franchise defenseman for a mid-round pick, two late-round picks, and a defensive prospect (not Provorov). |

I thought Martel looked good both ends of the ice but I am sure his size, considering the overall size of the Flyers, hurts his chances right now.
I think sometimes its also circumstance when you are a bottom 6 and esp 4th line talent at the NHL level. the competition is crazy. think about it, so few NHL spots in the bottom 6/3 and so many players going for those spots. have to think its easy for your chance to pass you by.
I recall Bill once mentioning if Brennan worked as hard as Manning has he may have been a NHL player (Bill correct me if I am misstating you). |

Provorov is my ONLY untouchable on the D end everyone else for the right deal may go. I understand wing is probably our most concerning position as of right now, I was just curious if Dahlin garners all the hype and if fans would get behind a theoretical deal. |

YuenglingJagr, any chance you can do a post on the top 10 prospects (your top 10)? - nastyflyergirl
Sure, I'll give it a shot. I am ranking them based on an imaginary NHL18 style "value" and ignoring anyone that has made an NHL debut.
1. Lindblom
2. Myers
3. Frost
4. Allison
5. Rubstov
6. Hart
7. Ratcliffe
8. Vorobyev
9. Hogberg
10. Laczynski
I am fine with Friedman in there...4-6 are all pretty even to me...I am not a huge Bernhardt fan, but others seem to be. |

I wouldn't be anxious to trade Ghost either. His offensive tools are so dynamic. |
