This is the conundrum the league faces now though. Viewed through a microscope and if you go by a checklist of what a clean hit is, this hit will likely fit the bill as legal.
Imo though, this hit was completely unnecessary and absolutely predatory in nature. If the Pitt player was crossing the slot and about to unleash a shot I could understand the speed and determination of Wilson to use the body like that. Not so much on a chip up the board. Wilson is a big dude and could have executed a big hit and accomplished his goal without even coming close to crossing the line. - climbdenali12
I'm sorry.... Unnecessary, they guy is CARRYING the puck out of the zone and got around the defender (Beagle). It is NOT a chip up the boards, watch the replay again starting at 30 seconds in Jans blog. And its not necessary because he is not getting a shot off? So no checking in the Neutral or Offensive zones? Bye Bye forechecking because that is "unnecessary"??
The purpose of a body check is to separate the man form the puck, he did exactly that, ZAR gave up the puck when he was faced with the decision of keeping possesion of the puck or getting hit.

Thanks for the definition of a body check.
Unnecessary seems to sum it up pretty fairly. Definitely predatory. My "chip up the board" verbiage lent itself to the type of play made by the Pitt player, I don't need to watch it again. Whether he "chipped it" or "gave up on it", whatever technicality you what to hang your hat on, the hit could have been accomplished without the intent to destroy the opposing player.
At no point did I mention anything about no checking in the neutral zone or forechecking so your being a bit extreme in this regard.
Very similar to the Phaneuf on Sauer hit in my eyes. Just unnecessary for accomplishing the goal of separating the man from the puck.
RDS in Canada is reporting that DU coach Jim Montgomery will be named the new head coach of the Dallas Stars - jimbo83
Wonder how far up the Rangers’ pecking order he was and if Gorton was dragging his feet, so he took the job offered to him, which is a pretty good one. Is Quinn or Keefe the target?

I'm hoping they can pry Keefe away. Do you know if there is any compensation involved if they snag him?
