If they had called the cross check on Reaves and negated the goal, then Wilson might not have hit Messerschmidt late out of frustration and Eva Peron might have not left the bench out of frustration. The refs need to get control of the game, it was getting away from them.

Surprised you missed this Peng, but on the shift before, Marchessault came in to Oshie and got him pretty good in the lower back when Oshie was tied up with another defender.

Refs set the tone by not calling stuff like that, and Wilson saw his opportunity. Glad Marchessault is okay.

Caps crosschecked a player right in the face after a very early whistle, right in front of the refs. No call. Whistles were already in the windpipe.

Whether or not he did i think everyone can agree that Wilson is a dirty POS.

I wonder if he'll have the balls to go with Reaves?. He was jawing at him some shifts later during a face-off and Wilson seemed to want no part of it.

Also to the idiot Rags fan that was spewing nonsense in the last thread about ratings.

Game 1 last night? Had a higher overnight rating than last year Final game one and the 2016 Stanley Cup Final game one.

Didn't miss anything. The Wilson hit is another league from what Marchessault did to Oshie.

I'm becoming a big fan of Sheng's blog. Really an outstanding blogger and he adds to the level of quality here on HB.

Other than the possible message being sent, that hit serves no purpose. That is the kind of opportunity where a player should just skate on by and have respect. No doubt that Marchessault needs to be more aware and not admire his pass, but he's vulnerable there. This is how the culture of the NHL has to change.

I'm not being dense. Wilson's predatory hit has nothing to do with a little cheapie from Marchessault. Nothing to do with the refs allowing little cheap stuff like that.

I don't think Wilson's hit has a place in the game. Like I wrote, it was a calculated (read smart) hit by Wilson; he knows what the league is looking hard at. He knows how hard he wanted to hit Marchessault. But regardless, I don't like it.

The little cheap stuff, I could care less about. One hit is indeed in another league.

In regards to the Wilson hit. If you drive your shoulder into another players shoulder that is not expecting it or is relaxed, you can cause real damage. It's exactly what Wilson tried to do.

Why does he keep hitting people from behind?

To say Marchy was admiring his pass is rubbish. Puck well gone, players aren't expecting to be hit. On top of that the position Wilson came from, it's ridiculous commentary to say Marchy could/should have done something different.

Go Knights!

Edit: Love all the haters being silenced by both Reaves & the results. Let's just hope Wilson actually has the balls to accept an invitation when he gets it to throw the gloves down. To date, he hasn't.

There are several players in the league who could benefit from this. However the game is played at such a high rate of speed today that every time someone is hit people on the interwebs forgo any sort of objectivity or critical thinking, and simply react as social media has trained them to do.

Lets not wrap the players in bubble wrap just quite yet. Sure Wilson is a dirty (frank)er, however as you put it Marchessault needs to keep his head on a swivel. Especially given the fact it's game 1 of the cup finals. The hit really wasn't that bad, and given Wilso's track record it was an improvement upon his past transgressions.
