The O'Reilly trade would not make any sense for Calgary. He's a left shooting centre. Only way I would even think about O'Reilly for Hamilton would be if Buf included their 1st round pick, which we know they won't be parting with. |

Of course they wouldnt give their 1st overall & of course we wouldnt give Hamilton for RoR. But RoR would be a huge get for us & our top 3 line pairs Peters likes to work with would be Moanahn/Gaudreau RoR/Tkachuk & Backlund/Frolik
Fit & rotate the missing pieces based on performance with Ferland/Bennett & maybe Dube or Mags or Foo, who cares, whoever comes to play.
Dahlin is going to be a stud but it may take him 1-2 years to really become that top pairing guy. They need to shore up on their backend. It's got to be Brodie + something else going back, not Dougie. Tre is probably trying to find out what market values are &which teams are really aggressive in wanting help on their backend.
Dougie is a franchise player & you would need a franchise player coming back, end of story. |

No! That's way too much for Hoffman. I would go Brodie for Hoffman - but Ottawa would have to add to that. Maybe Hoffman and a 2nd this year for Brodie. If not - hold onto Brodie and see what else is available from other teams. Brodie has real value - he did not have a great year last year but he has a lot of the attributes in a defenceman that teams are looking for - and there is a demand for mobile defencemen who can move the puck up ice. Also - he is still relatively young at 27 (maybe 28) and he has a great contract that still has term on it.

Yikes, this sounds like a terrible deal for Calgary. Remove the 2nd round draft pick and that might be more palatable.
Oh, and I would not call Dougie Hamilton a "Franchise player". A very important "core" player but never a "franchise" player.

We're not gonna add to Hoffman to get Brodie... We could talk about a 1 for 1 if we resign Karlsson, because I think Brodie-Karlsson would be a good first pairing for us.

Ok, so as I said "If not - hold onto Brodie and see what else is available from other teams. Brodie has real value"
I believe that there are, or there will be at the draft, other return options for a player like Brodie.
1 for 1 - Brodie for Hoffman - No thanks |

Wouldnt be the end of the world for a 1 for 1, both have 2 years left, cap hits similar, Brodie will be 30 & Hoffman 31 at the end of their deals. But I agree, I would see what others would be willing to pay, which Im sure Tre is doing. He's also gauging value with both Brodie & Hamilton. |

This guy is smoking the laced poop... what exactly is a franchise player to you?! He's 24. He's going to be our top D man for years to come. That's literally the definition of a franchise player.
I do agree with your first paragraph however. |

I'd be down for a one for one. Andersson can take Brodie's spot and put Hoffman on the top line RW. I could live with that.

Yeah I think it makes sense for both teams really. That being said if Larsson gets Hall, maybe we can trade Brodie for Drouin? |

A "franchise" player in my mind is a player that you build your team around. A player that will lead your team (like Gio or Erik Karlsson). It's not just about scoring goals, it is about a player who gives his all every shift. A player who will carry the load for his team when it's needed. When you say the Calgary Flames, it is his face that you imagine representing his team. I'm sorry, but I just don't see that in Dougie. He's a great player with huge value to his team no doubt, but I don't see him as our "franchise" player like Iggy was for so many years. Just my opinion we can certainly agree to disagree. |
