Bob Duff: A summer of decisions awaits Beyond their No. 6 overall pick in the NHL entry draft, the Detroit Red Wings also discussed free agency and the need for a back-up goalie during their scouting meetings last week.

Will coach & gm survive another season of terribleness?

Maybe they've already made some inquiries, but I'd still like to see the Wings try to pry Grubauer out of Washington if the cost isn't prohibitive. He's 26 and has a great statistical track record, and has done just about everything he'd need to do to earn a starting gig somewhere (that he isn't getting anytime soon playing behind Holtby). He's an RFA, so obviously it would depend on the Red Wings being able to come to terms with him.

Hutton strikes me as average goalie who had a fluke career year. I think it's unlikely an unremarkable, undrafted career backup suddenly became a world-beater at age 32. I'm sure he'd be fine as a backup but I'm worried that we'd be buying high on him now, especially with such a weak UFA market for goalies.

Khudobin is meh. Also old, also unremarkable. Still, considering how crappy the market is he might be the best value option realistically on the table.

Agreed.

Grubauer as a long term option.

Otherwise I say take a 1 or 2 year deal on Chad Johnson.

Still don't like how they handled Machovsky. Why bring the guy over if you are going to stick him in Toledo.

Not sure if Holland is getting orders from Illitch to put butts in the seats or not but it's pretty damn sad that Holland thinks he can accomplish that by signing old guys like Kovalchuk, Vanek, Green and whatever old backup they sign.

I don't think even casual fans are dumb enough to fall for this crap since the Wings would have zero improvement where they were the worst...their defense core.
