I think you answered your own question about Quinn Hughes and Noah Dobson. "types of players".
I don't see Dobson being a true number #1 personally. I also don't see Hughes as a #1 either.
Hughes will probably put up more points then Dobson will. Dobson will probably have a more rounded out defensive game then Hughes ever will.
Vancouver needs both players but could only draft 1.
The reason i disliked the pick was because JB has been talking about a RHD for so long. There doesn't project to be many real good RHD next season. Quite a few LHD again though.
We all know what the depth chart looks like in Vancouver about 15 guys on the left and 2 on the right. - manvanfan
Yes its true JB cited a scoring PP RHD was his biggest wish. Hughes stated pros & cons to playing either side & he is comfortable either way. He went onto to say playing RHD opens up more shooting & puck handling chances rather than skating the line from the LHD to get opportunities. BPA by JB was the reason Hughes was picked & at the time it was fortuitous he dropped to us. |

Playing on the right side doesn't give him right handed opportunities. |

In terms of "size" comparables for Hughes, Klingberg and Werenski are probably not a match
Krug doesn't quite have the speed that Hughes does. Ghostisbehere is a close comparison. Tyson Barrie was left off NHL top 20 defensemen list because his offence is awesome but his defence is still not great.
The same can be said with the so called best defensemen in the world. He was so much better when he played with Methot.
I think Hughes turns into Ryan Ellis but with speed. - manvanfan
I liken Hughes more to Reilly & his defence is ok. Barrie is like Gardiner & a gaff waiting to happen. All said scoring is needed. |

Is the Memorial Cup recency bias bigger than World Junior Championship recency bias when it comes to unlimited potential players? - Lindenis#1
Memorial cup bias plus world junior bias equates to maximum recency bias. |

True but Edler on PP LHD doesn’t improve our PP either. Better shooting angles from the offside for D creates more chances. |

In modern PP configurations there really isn't a LHD position. Just the Dman at the top.
Edler is left handed. So is Hughes. Edler's inability to have one timers and shooting lanes isn't going to be any different than Hughes. The only difference will be Hughes ability to walk the line and open up a lane with his feet, but that's not going to give him quick shooting opportunities, and Hughes isn't much of a shooter anyway.
The Canucks PP as its been with Hank as the half wall has never been meant for a LH dman at the top, but its all they have. Its why Garrison failed and Edler is frustrating.
Now with Hank gone things could change, except you have Boeser on the other side and he's not going to be your half wall QB. He's going to be your cross ice shooting threat like Stamkos, Ovechkin, etc.
So basically the Canucks PP with the current roster is never going to be a perfect fit for a LH dman. |

Curious on this...
Who here would pick Dobson over Hughes?
I liked both but Hughes was obvious. |

You’ve described why 2 lefties in the Sedins made righties less effective. With Bo & BB being righties a LHD can be more of a force.
One sided PP is predictable so having both sides a viable threat ups opportunities. |

Horvat is left handed. The Canucks only, actual, PP player at this point to shoot right handed is still Boeser.
For the bolded: no. If EP, as people assume, is basically going to step into the Hank role then it won't matter because EP is left handed too.
This handedness thing should be a simple concept.
All powerplay units in the league are designed around being one sided. Having your QB-Bumper-Dman front work some cycle and movement to open a lane for a cross ice pass > shot or back door play. |

Stand corrected on Bo thx
I still maintain a RH threat in a leftie dominant league is needed. BB on his offside is onetimer Ovechkin & Stamkosesque.
Oates & Hull
Gretzky & Kurri
As for PP Dman shooting or passing or shot/passes from the middle is important. Hughes tends to use his skating & skills to circle to the right then make a cut. The shooting & passing angles open up in a hurry. |
