He wanted out after the Vancouver Olympics, when the fans were cheering for Canada and not his US team...he was butthurt.

The lack of prospects thanks to Gillis cause JB to have to sign player whether they were to remain competitive or tank. It's no difference in my mind. Van has been bad either way is the result. The cost of the those players shouldn't matter to us.

Developing takes years unfortunately and Van was probably the worst in the league. With better drafting in the coming years Van should again have a hockey club that can compete year after year.

JB has had a vision and lots have hated him because they didn't see eye to eye with what was happening. In the end he is doing exactly what most wanted. Draft and develop.

BTW....being a GM isn't a popularity contest, everyone likes Benning (the person) and he's one of the worst GM's in the league. It's not about being a nice guy, it's about making good decisions for your organization, even if they're unpopular.

It’s what it says about the Canucks in the post-Linden era.

Linden, the recently deposed president, lost his job because he favoured a patient, methodical approach to the team’s rebuild. He’s since told friends the Aquilinis wanted no part of that plan and when Benning presented a more aggressive approach, which included an offer sheet for John Tavares, Linden was dumped.

Karlsson would seem to be part of this new, aggressive approach. This is the third occasion — Karlsson, Tavares, P.K. Subban — in which Benning has made noises about pursuing a marquee name, which likely plays well with ownership.

But it leaves the faithful to wonder what is the vision for this team. The Canucks lone strength is its prospect pool. It’s the only reason their fan base haven’t given up on this team.

So is the plan now to peel off three or four of those young assets to land a star? That’s the only way you’re going to land a Karlsson-type player and Benning knows that. He should also know making that kind of deal will further alienate a fan base whose patience has been worn to a nub.

It’s just the latest example of an organization which trips all over itself trying to tell its story. The Canucks’ direction remains muddied but one thing is clear. They’re not going to win back consumer confidence by changing course again.

The precursor to those paragraphs is men used to use cups with lead in them when they drank whiskey, the lead would get into their drink and knock them out for days apparently.

I think he just mis-spoke there calling it an "offer sheet" instead of simply a contract offer. If people get stuck on that and don't read between the lines, quite frankly, they're as dumb as the editor who allowed that to be printed.
