Hi Bill -

Question: Is sending Rubtsov down in the first round of cuts to send a message?

- hockeyal

Not Bill, but

I don't see it that way, to be honest. I don't think he was ever in the running for the NHL roster. Hexy even mentioned how good he thought Rubstov was earlier in camp. I think a year in the A will benefit Rubstov, hopefully he can develop more of the offensive game. Needs to become more assertive.

so 14 (13 RIP) players that aren't good enough and 1 guy that is definitely an NHL player but just doesn't have a spot or team interested enough
- YuenglingJagr

Hard to believe that Jason Akeson hasn't caught on with an NHL team. The analytics clan on this site labeled him a play driver! Must be bad luck.

I think one of the things that hurt Vecchione's short term chances was the Flyers lucking into drafting Nolan Patrick and this was before Giroux was moved over to wing.

Having a guy like Patrick who was phyisically ready at 19 to play in the NHL probably pushed the center depth chart downwards in such a way that a guy like Vecchione would have a tougher climb.

Unless there are injuries, trades, etc, he may have to go elsewhere to get a sniff of the NHL.

- johndewar

In my opinion the Flyers had two center ice spots open for competition. Vecchione was sent back early and didn't even make it to the last cuts to be in the running for a spot.

If you want to guess that those not out skating today are probably not long for the official roster, those players are: Bardreau, Carey, Fazleev, Laberge, Varone, Martel, Aube-Kubel & Brennan. Obviously, that's not confirmed, but it'd be weird they're not practicing otherwise.

Interesting tweet from Charlie...

I have no doubt Carter Hart will be an injury call up by December 1st given the Flyers' goaltending medical situation(s).
- johndewar

Lol, Lyon, then Neuvirth and Stolie will probably be on IR by Halloween. Hell, Hart will be their #1 by Thanksgiving

And dont’t forget the crap ass playoff performances last 4 seasons by Elliott. Flyer’s will never win a playoff series with this motley goalie crew! Hopefully HART will come in to save the day.

I could probably read too much into but I think they want Rubtsov playing top 6 minutes in Lehigh. With that I also think it lends to the team thinking Vorobyev is making the roster.

Again probably totally wrong. Just my thoughts.

Maybe?

Just off of the top of my head, though, it seems like the Phantoms have a ton of forwards, including:

Bardreau
Carey
Goulbourne
McDonald
Knight
NAK
Martel
Vecchione
Conner
Twarynski
Varone
Krushelnyski
Kase
Rubstov
Bunnaman
Fazleev

There's not going to be enough ice for all of them. I feel like someone has to go.

I get it. i was mainly looking down the middle. I could see guys like Fazleev and Goulbourne being pushed out a little. I think you would want to push Rubtsov in more a scoring role and look for him to be engaged offensively.
