Not at all, if they are going to play and produce like first and second liners then Jimbo really is a genius. Burrows at $2.5m scoring 30 goals was a thing of beauty!
If they are going to play with the top players and continue to put up 4th line like numbers then yeah, I wouldn’t like that much.
I find it funny that you are cap conscious and look to squeeze $600k out of Hutton on a three year deal (or simply walk away) but you are all good with paying $8m to what should be your 4th line. If it isn’t our money than it isn’t our money for any player (even LE), but if managing the cap is important than managing it is important for all the players, not just the ones you like. - 1970vintage

So Benning said on the radio that they had EP “way higher” on their draft list...so he was clearly a top 3 pick for them. We know they had Hughes near the the top as well. It’s almost as if we won a lottery pick the last two years as we would have got these guys if we had won 3rd pick both drafts anyways. Interesting to think about. - CanuckDon

I found this a bit odd myself. - Nucker101
The team has 25 million committed to basically 6 role players for the next 3 years.
In that same time frame you're gonna find yourself walking with a 12 million dollar Elias and hefty raises on all the players making scraps right now. 2021 could be a legit cap crunch for this team if things stay relatively linear.
Jimbo better hope for a big camp jump and someone willing to take those contracts off his hands for cheap. |

I don't think he'll be around for any cap crunch. Aqua better make sure the next GM is good with contracts/cap management. |

Just cause I know it’s going to piss a bunch of you off...
@Codes - you said you were too old to understand PDO, so I was star shaming you.
@Redmile - whatever you wrote is a bunch of nonsense and you clearly don’t understand what a statistic is, or how it is valuable.
@Makita - pretty much the same as what I just said.
The entire point of a statistic is to remove the variability that occurs in small samples. It doesn’t matter if Sutter plays with Boeser one game and Gaunce another. Over a large enough sample the variation smooths and you can draw more significant conclusions.
I’m not “for” or “against” stats, they are what they are. It’s easy to misrepresent data with bad statistics, but if done correctly they can tell an accurate story and are a good predictor of future outcomes.
Also, I freaking can’t stand the term “Advanced Stats”. Bunch of BS. Some of the measures are more complicated to calculate than others but the term advanced makes them sound like they are better in some way.
Finally, for you eye test crowd, unless you are going to the games you are full of poop. You can’t see enough of the playing surface to get the full picture of the play unless the player you are interested in has the puck, or all 10 guys are fighting for the puck, like they do in Atom hockey. |

The way our contracts are staggered with the kids in line for raises & vets gone or retired i don’t foresee a cap crunch. The cap rising & the Seattle e-draft will help us as well. |

Earlier in that blog there was discussion about what to do with Hutton . Some were for bringing him back and some were against paying him north of 3 mil. I suggest one time there is an option where you can exercise and save 10 % and now I am advocating the savings of 600 K |

On the guess we will face a cap crunch...
The Leafs:
JT @11m
AM maybe 11-12m
Marner mabe 8-9m
Marleau 6.25m
Reilly 5m
Anderson 5m
Nylander TBD & the linch pin to manage the cap. Using those $$$’s i cannot see us anywhere near a cap crunch in the next few years. In fact our cap is in great shape if our prospects earn spots on ELC’s. |

I understand PDO. I made the age comment in poor taste. Many of the older gents seem to have given me a hard time the last time i brought analytics. I have learned to pick up on my audience when it comes to the subject and not bring it up in here. Its for the best. It brings out the worst in people lol (ie the last 2 days in here) |

I don’t write off analytics. I do say the eye test comes 1st then backed up by stats & the longer the sample size the better. There is simply too many factors that happen in game that make analytics very subjective.
Player match ups & TOI can vary so widely in game it alone is inconsistent. Eg short shifting & scoreboard can dictate coaches line choices. |

Back to the cap crunch...
Leafs face losing Gardiner to sign their big 3 RFA’s. I don’t see that being a probkem for us in the next 3-5yrs or longer. Only thing i can add is if we do have cap problems we are doung awfully damn well & idk who wouldn’t love that problem 😂😂
On a side bar current contracts can be moved or bought out if needed. |
