Yeah, i can't imagine it's high on his wishlist.

I mean, what options does he have?

1. Sign a 1 year contract with the Leafs for a few mil.
2. Play in Sweden
3. Asked to be traded. And hope there's a team that is willing to pay him 8 mil a year

- walshyleafsfan

There is no hope.

He is an FA. No doubt teams have talked to his agent about what it would cost to sign him.

How do you not pay Marner the same as McDavid? Is that the question?
- walshyleafsfan

I think he means Matthews.

He's a RFA.

Wouldn't teams need permission to talk to him?

I honestly don't know what he is thinking.

I mean, none of us know what is really happening. For all we know, he asked for 5 million long term and we offered 3 million...

If we assume most people's opinions of the situation are at least in the ballpark, then I don't see how this ends well for Nylander.

How the hell does he think this nets him more money? Is he dumb enough to throw away millions on the principle that he things he is worth more? Does he understand what a salary cap is? Is there any value in playing for a contending team?

- Aetherial

I think he values $$$ a lot more than the average player.

I'm hoping Mitch takes a friendly deal around $8m or he'll end up with a bridge too I think.

I think we all hope that.

The thing is Matthews is going to want more than McDavid. We all know he is not as good, regardless of some pretty dumb rationalizations by some people here.

The market for Matthews sets his price, not the stats. He knows this, and so does his agent. Does anyone doubt that there is at least 1 team that offer-sheets him something ridiculous on July 1?

So then how do you deal with Marner, who will get more points again this year, looked much better in last year's playoffs, and arguably is the more dangerous player a lot of the time.

I know I am guilty of being overly negative, but I think there is a real danger that those contracts become a major problem for the Leafs. You can't have that many players of that caliber in the cap world.

I hope you are right Santo.

Because if Matthews and Marner take the same approach the Leafs are fcuked.

Nope.

an RFA just means it has to be an offer sheet. I am sure every interested team has had at least a chat with his agent.

Friedman said Carolina would be all in...Pretty sure it was confirmed that Carolina and his agent have had conversations. Carolina knows what it is going to take and judging by the amount they are scouting the Leafs they are fine with it.

The motive for releasing a legally recorded conversation is irrelevant. Their comments were news and were released as news. Uber policy only says that drivers need to adhere to local policy laws and the driver did so as Arizona is a single party release jurisdiction - either party to a recorded conversation can release it.

I don't think Carolina would be wise to give up a 1st...with Hughes available.

But If Carolina wants Nylander as bad as they are rumored to be Nescas might have to be in the package. They will have to give up a lot for him.

- Santo_44

Thing is we'd need to give up something bigger salary wise anyway.

Matthews is different.

A franchise player will get paid what he is worth...if he takes a bit less than that is awesome.

Marner is the interesting one. He has strong roots in Toronto which is one thing that plays into the Leafs favor. Every other aspect is completely unknown.

If you are Marner or Matthews, what teams would you rather pay for that can afford a 10+million salary?

maybe:
1/ New York Rangers (it's NYC)
2/ Montreal (with Toronto, the greatest franchise in hockey)
although those teams really don't have alot of capspace to begin with.

after that??? maybe Colorado / Columbus / SJ / Floriday / NYI / Flyers ??
not sure whether any of those teams make sense; probably the most dangerous team for an offer sheet would be San Jose.

Gonna be great trading Nylander, an RFA who wants $8 Mill per, for Teravainen, a pending RFA that's going to want $7 Mill per and a $5 mill per year defenseman.

And, now he is pegged as a " Me first player". Shooting himself in the foot.

Which people and teams will easily forget once he gets back to scoring 60pts or potentially more.

Matthews agent will ask for a certain percentage of the cap, maybe the same percentage as what mcjesus signed for.
Which means his annual salary will be more.

Just an idea that was thrown around by some insiders.

If you sign Matthews to 5 years 9 million....It brings down Marners asking price.

PC signed Mcdavid to 12.5 million and Dri rightfully said "I am not 5.5 million less important to our team than Mcdavid"

Not really....I mean you can throw in Brock Mcginn..he doesn't add any value to a deal of this magnitude.
