Here's the thing though, if a potential deal with Carolina only involved Nylander. Why would Carolina scouts and reps be at the last 5 Leaf home games?
- PatC80

oh you... always so sensible.

can't expect the Carolina fan(s) to answer that honestly... can you ?

Nobody has but if somebody did and gave him 8 AAV, it would be a 1st, 2nd and a 3rd. That's a pretty cheap price for Nylander. Leafs would be forced to match.

Burke says GMs use to be pirates, even said Lou was a pirate. Given their success so far, kind of surprised Lou hasn't thrown an offer sheet at Nylander. He either gets a very good player at a good price or he (frank)s over his old team because he knows exactly how much they want to spend on everybody and makes their lives harder.

so, 'even you' forget why there's never an offer sheet anymore...:
https://www.capfriendly.com/offer-sheet-calculator
"The AAV for an offer sheet, which determines the compensation required, is derived by dividing the total contract value amount by the lesser of:
number of years offered, or
five (5) years."

...not gonna happen!

8 AAV over 5 years? Why can't that happen?

Simple. It eliminates the front-loaded contract, which I would want if I was Nylander.

So you didn't have a brain cramp

BUT - if the Leafs offer Willie a 7 years, 7M per deal - doesn't that mean whoever team must also offer a 7 year deal? Or does the $$ per come '1st' so to speak...?

I think his demands are basically offersheet proof. LeBrun asked around the league in an Athletic article and a bunch of GMs anonymously replied and were like, "no way he's worth that".

Of course they're going to say that, they don't want to drive up the value of their own players.

Plus the article didn't say GMs, they were 'executives'. I don't know why people keep insisting that.

Meh, not really. Just calling it for what it is.

I'd really love for something to happen so we can get over it. At this point I'm indifferent and would be happy enough with anything.

If Lou wanted to (frank) over the Leafs, he'd offer him 40 million over 5 years. That's 8 AAV and only a 1st, 2nd and a 3rd in compensation. The Leafs would be forced to accept or get (frank) all in return for Nylander.

It works for Nylander because instead of a "bridge" deal, he gets a high paying deal that makes him a UFA quicker.

That doesn't matter if he's getting 40 million in 5 years and becomes a UFA faster.

Depends if the team making the offer really wants him or if they want to (frank) up the Leafs cap situation.

Like I said, if Lou wanted to (frank) poop up, he could throw him a 5 year, 40 million dollar deal, get him for less than he's worth in draft pick compensation OR force the Leafs to match an 8 AAV deal that makes him a UFA faster.

That's all basic, but my Q was ~if the Leafs offer 7x7, is an 8x5 offer sheet considered higher - or does the total amount of $$ in the Leafs offer mean that the offer sheet needs to be higher than 49 (7x7)?

It depends which one he signs, that's the one that counts.

If he signs an offer sheet, the Leafs can match it, not modify it.
