It was firkin awesome.. For the record, I did not boo Gardiner. It was great to go a game.. I haven't been to a home game in about 5 years.

Gardiner fails the eye test for most fans because the glaring errors even a drunk idiot can't miss, hence the hatred. But when he quietly plays mostly mistake-free hockey for the other 55 minutes of the game, nobody sees that.

I'm not saying he's an elite defenseman, but I think he's a quality defenseman and as a 3/4 guy he's right there with the rest of the league.

He's going to get 6M with term and we'll be a lesser team when he's gone unless we can replace him.

Even with Dermott sliding up, the kid hasn't even played a full season yet; he'll be the next goat on the team with some fans.

The odds of Dermott being as good as Gardiner are slim. Chris Chelios used to make at least one big gaff a game but he didn’t play in Toronto so no problem.

BTW, Dermott has been given some increased responsibilities lately. He's been the worst defenseman at -9 in the last 10 games. Zaitsev is second worst at -1, so Dermott has been impressively bad.

serious question - is there a limit to how a team can hold back in terms of contract? i.e. Leafs are holding 1.5M$ for Kessel... is there a limit to that amount?

It's a small sample, and the team has not been good or at least had any sustained results over the past 10 games. But Dermott is definitely the worst.

Dermott: 4A; -9
Zaitsev: 0; -1
Ozhiganov: 2G, 1A; even
Gardiner: 3A; +3
Hainsey: 3A; +3
Rielly: 2G, 5A; +3

It's one of those things. Hainsey is awful, but he plays primarily with Rielly who has been insanely good.
