Leafs GM Kyle Dubas has indicated going that he is looking more to acquire players with term left on their contract prior to the deadline.

I'd love to get Toffoli and Muzzin from LA. Both have medium sized cap hits, and a year remaining on their current deals.

Explain to me how you think this is not a good deal for both clubs? Toronto fills a void of a top pair defenseman.

St Louis gets a young scorer in Johnsson, a reasonably priced stay at home defensman in zeitzev, a grade A defensive prospect who can make the jump to the nhl next year and a 1st round pick.

This deal is better than what SJ spent to get Karlsson, and Pietrangelo doesnt have the hardware that Karlsson has!

I think the Leafs keep Johnsson or Kapanen. Likely not both. Kap I dont think has arbitration rights whereas Johnsson does..Johnsson would be the first traded if it was about contracts.

The price really isn’t that bad. Zaistev is negative value, should be happy to get rid of that contract. It would basically use up all the half decent assets the leafs would be willing to move aside from Sandin which would be not good, but really those aren’t over pays in my eyes.

Leafs shouldn’t have as big of a problem signing Kapanen and Johnsson as your implying. Should be able to get them on reasonable 1 or 2 year deals. They don’t have a ton of leverage or big sample sizes of production.
