I vaguely remember seeing Howell play, how I remember his name was collecting hockey cards or getting these hockey medallions with the players faces and stats on from Boxes of jello and from BP gas stations. - paulr
He always looked like he was in his 50's due to the grey hair. |

But, as others have correctly pointed out with varying levels of snark, none of us know unless we're in their heads. - pdx2ord
Don't feel too bad pdx; it's also one of the reasons I don't post much any more. The old gang is back at it and it is tiring if one doesn't fall in line with the "everything is great" narrative. Also don't appreciate the JJ bashing that continues.

Several of the Hawks d-men have a (bad) habit of bracing for the hit along the boards instead of quickly moving the puck. I get that is sometimes the smart play when there is no outlet option apparent but it seems it is becoming the norm even when there is a split second or two to make a play. Too many times the d-man is too concerned about bracing for the hit and it results with the forechecker pinning the Hawks d-man to the board and ending up with the puck. Dahlstrom is especially prone to do that and he needs to man up and make better plays. - EbonyRaptor
Yikes. Bears watching beyond this season. Too bad we do not have a few Bears players to throw out there! You know what I mean: big strong nasty

I wonder if the Hawks sat Perlini down and showed him videos of Michael Frolik a top draft pick but not a top 6 player?
He really has all the tools Frolik has but a bit more size. Told him if you learn and follow our instructions you can have a nice career like Michael has. Btw great trade by Stan
Shaw was told what he needed to work on by the Hawks if he wanted any chance of being drafted by the them, if i remember correctly the scout begged them to draft Shaw in his 3rd eligible draft.
Time will tell - BetweenTheDots
I am sorry, but this narrative of somehow the board has decided Perlini is a bottom 6 player is insane. Perlini will be an effective top 9 forward with the hawks for a while.
Lets get used to it. In fact, adding his size, speed and shot to Strome and Debrincat may be scary.
Contrary to the conventional wisdom here, Perlini does not lack hockey IQ or desire, to the contrary. Like most of us have dealt with from time to time in our lives, we get a new opportunity and over think it and try too hard. Just out of sync.
Perlini needs to watch film of Alex Killorn or JT Miller on Tampa, that is what he will become. That is no disrespect to Frolik, who by the way has had bigger roles since leaving here 100 years ago.
And nobody in their right mind is going to talk to a 22 year old who has barely started to scratch the surface of his potential about becoming a grinder..if they did, the player would laugh in their face. |

Watching Pitt v Boston. Tyler Myers would be the Hawks best Defenseman, which I guess isn’t saying much. |

Harry Howell was like Pierre Pilote, both wore #3, both were captains, both were left handed playing the right slide, and both were considered offensive defenseman (which had a totally different meaning until Orr arrived on the scene)

The Moose best the Icehogs twice in close road contests. Noticed Hillman back in lineup..Holland appears like he is all too important relied or expected for goal scoring. |

My point was and is the Leafs match up better against Tampa than they do against the Bruins. The Bruins forecheck drives the Leafs crazy, Tampa' s game plan allows the Leafs to play their game and that's the only chance the Leafs have of advancing. In October I predicted the Lightening would win it all, I still think they are the team to beat. - paulr

Is it me or does Pittsburgh look like they are playing man to man defense? Doumallin twice in a row followed a player all the way to the left point . |

I don't think anyone ever thought "everything was or is great". You and others spent all your time poking holes in a lineup that was the best in hockey over a decade. You made up all kinds of nosense with no proof, from the president meddling, to the GM owing it all to the previous GM, to the coach who didn't play guys the way YOU expected him to, to the stupid goal song and you and your ridiculous theory that the team didn't know how to sharpen the player's skates. Of course other posters, many of whom are the most knowledgable, challenged you.

Everything is perspective Paulr. Being in LA, I get to see the Kings a lot. Bad contracts that are unloveable, old team, their $10 million dollar center with 0 PPG this year, fans wanting the whole team blown up. |

Well they sat Perlini for a few games
“It’s the same speech I’ve had with him a few times,” coach Jeremy Colliton said. “I’m not so concerned about whether the puck’s going in the net, I feel that will take care of itself. It’s the play away from the puck, it’s the pressure on the puck. It’s the work ethic, it’s the 50-50s around the lines. That’s what allows you to have positive shifts. So if he does that, then he’ll get his chances.”
You say grinder i say solid hockey player, if he becomes a top 6 player wow, that's a bonus, infact if he becomes a bottom 6 player to me that's a bonus. One has to crawl before he can walk.... |

Well let's hope not because he'll to wait only a few months past the end of his senior season to become a FA and get to pick the team ha plays for. The good news is hes only a sophomore this season and asking most 20 year olds to wait 2 1/2 years for something is a big ask.

Ever hear of Doug Gilmour? When he made the NHL after a great junior career, he was taught to check, to kill penalties, to understand the defensive side of the game and he turned our to be a pretty decent all round player. There's nothing wrong with Perlini learning how to play defensively and earn a spot in the lineup. Unless of course TC you're one of those millennials who believe the world owes it to you.

I guess it could just be a difference in the definition of "grinder" but to me "grinder" is a pretty specific job description for a hockey player totally separate from "solid hockey player". A good grinder should be a solid hockey player but a solid hockey player isn't necessarily a grinder. To me, a grinder has two primary objectives - (1) play physical, and (2) don't get scored on. Any scoring done by a grinder is a bonus not a requirement. |

Maybe my understanding of what a "grinder" is is wrong. I define grinder as a 4th line type guy who gets only 8 or 9 minutes TOI, gets 4 hits and doesn't get scored on. A grinder who can consistently get 4 hits in 8-9 minutes and didn't get scored on would be considered to have had a pretty good game - for a "grinder". Did anyone think Doug Gilmore would have a good game by playing 8-9 minutes TOI with 4 hits and no points?
It seems making a comparison to TG's comment about a grinder is not comparable to Doug Gilmore who was much more than a grinder even before he got better defensively. All players should he held accountable defensively and try to improve - it's not just a grinder thing.
