Let alone its a 35+ contract, you are paying the whole cap hit. There's no "buyout savings"

If acquiring a contract gets you an asset then why does it matter? Who you rather buyout Shattenkirk or acquire and buyout Merleau?

Edit: Because just by cap savings the answer is clear.

yeah, that's what I am talking about

this idea is the Rangers pay the whole freight on the buyout so the Leafs can re-sign him for a million

yeah, suck my nads

The buyout is a year. 1 year.

I know it is, the difference that you and I will always have about this though is that I want to compete next year, you don't

Correct. If you really want to waste a Friday, go check out all the old Traffic stuff on YouTube. Sooo good and mostly unknown, even in classic rock circles.

My band is picking up Feeling Alright for an upcoming gig. I've only ever known the Joe Cocker version, so therefore I have never known the words!!!

Look, Kapanen is a good player who's young. I just don't consider him to move the needle enough to jump through all these hoops to get him. All these teams against the cap, wouldn't there be other teams who could offer us "Kapanens" without having to do all these steps?

Well if you're planning on having Fox, Kravtsov, Chytil, Andersson, Kakko and Howden on the roster, that is 6 player with a combined 199 games of NHL experience. Growing pains are still gonna happen.

If they need help we’ll take Marner, not Kappy. Then everyone is happy

Same. One of my complaints about team tank, is in theory there is never a set time to just stop. How we got there is irrelevant now, we got our high draft pick. Let's start putting this together. I think we could be a playoff bubble team next year.

Which team is like Toronto that has cap troubla, with RFA like Marner and Kapenen?

You should suggest that in the Leafs thread and see how happy they are

Marner is elite, I absolutely would do those kind of things for him. I'm just not jumping through major hoops to bring statistically the next Stepan to the team. Yeah, in the long run it probably helps us, but it's not like he's a franchise player.

Tampa is one that comes to mind. Even excluding Point, some of their guys are probably about as good as Kapanen.

For sure.
But (2Sticks1Puck beat me to it), I really think that even with the growing pains we have a legit shot at 3rd in the Metro next season. It would take some of the youngsters clicking, for sure. But, the division is not quite the powerhouse it was a few years ago right now.

They won't have trouble getting Marner signed, but they will definitely have trouble getting other guys, who are still important, signed.

It won't be easy getting Kapanen and Johnsson under contract and then replacing Gardiner and Hainsey.

Gotta figure Calle Rosen will be a dirt cheap, but inexperienced, replacement on the blueline. They still need one more guy after that to round out 6 defenseman and maybe even a veteran 7th guy.

I see where you're coming from. However, Kapanen does not resemble Stepan in any fashion.
I am certainly not in favour of any of this Marleau BS, but I would move out a couple of our current wingers if it brought in Kapanen somehow.

I would expect they will put Ozhiganov into one of those spots, even if he stumbles. They have few options.

Tampa needs to make a trade, I'd gladly take back Callahan to get back Erne or Paquette.
