Not alone. Still worth considering as painful as it would be.

Rishaug is reporting that it’s probably down to Hunter and Gretzky for the GM position barring a Holland change of heart

“Situation remains fluid but it seems Hunter and K.Gretzky are down to the wire. Sense is Burke really impressed, was very close as well and could be an option for other roles. Wild card is a Ken Holland change of heart, but barring a surprise, my guess is it's a 2 horse race now”

Went through it with Wayne....don’t feel like a repeat here....if you can’t build a team around the best player of this generation then you need to find a new line of work....like Chia is experiencing

I've heard the thought of Hunter as GM with Gretzky and Burke as AGMs dealing with amateur and pro respectively. I don't hate the idea so long as it's accompanied by a prompt "promotion" of MacT and Howson out of hockey ops entirely.

I don't disagree. Hence why the moment McDavid demands a trade, the acting management should all be handed notices of termination. If it comes to that point, Katz will need to tear down the ENTIRE organization and rebuild it with a new guy that'll get value out of such a trade.

Replacing McDavid with Marner and Rielly is hardly a drop-off in skill.

Well if it’s down to those two then I would prefer Hunter....I don’t mind Gretzky as a AGM and I think Burke would be a smart hire.....the real question here is how much say will Hunter really have in regards to running this team?

Katz should be cleaning house now....if Hunter is the GM then let him make all the decisions and bring in who he wants....I have read that Hunter understands his weaknesses and likes to surround himself with smart people to fill in the knowledge gap he lacks which is a great thing.....if it’s Hunter then let him run it and give the rest of them their walking papers

I'm sure we'd know before too long. We have an idea of the types of teams Hunter likes to build in the OHL and it's fair to guess some of that will translate into his NHL vision (speed, tenacity and two-way play). If we hear of him hiring an analytics department, then we can be safe that at least Pete's influence is gone. I don't know if you recall, but MacT wasn't slow on adopting analytics and deeper evaluative methods. Petus was the one who quashed that stuff.

I see enough of McDavid's ugly mug every chance that CBC or Sportsnet get the chance. I'm intimately familiar with the pores on his cheeks; in 4K-HD no less.

I want to see (way) less him, rather than more.
Good luck with the rebuild. You should be ready to condend during Connor's final two years, I figure.

- MABster

How many playoff rounds have the Flames won since Connor was drafted? Less than the Oilers? Ohhh 0?? Ohhhh ok. Congrats on the extra week of hockey you got in this year. That 1-8 playoff record over the last 3 seasons is really impressive. We should be taking notes..

I agree, but maybe that'll come to pass. Maybe he will get managerial autonomy on the hockey ops side of things and do just that.

I’m stuck with this weird feeling that Gretzky might get it....I’m hoping not but what would be the typical Oilers move here?

Interesting thought to further drive home the point of how inept the Oilers are: when was the last time the Oilers had an executive approached by another team in their hiring process for GM? I can't think of any.

Well to be fair this whole interview process is a new and exciting thing for them since they haven’t done it since Sather was no longer the GM

You lose any trade for McDavid. The trade you think you’re getting back, you’re not because chances are you’re dealing from a position of weakness. Teams knows you are trading him and you lose a bit of power. It never fails.

You’re likely getting a top tier piece, 2 B players/prospects and an assortment of picks. You’re getting 6-7 pieces. But you don’t have to look far back to see that when big players move, it’s almost always a losing proposition for the team that’s got the better player. Unless it’s a 1 for 1 hockey trade (eg. McDavid for Matthews style).

But the idea of getting two top end pieces back plus a whole bunch of players/prospects probably doesn’t happen.

"Best player to ever play the game"....
Excuse me a second while I puke.. mcdavid is hands down the best player in the Nhl today and may very well go down as one of the greatest to ever play even maybe above crosby (who has won everything). But to claim he is in the same stratosphere as orr/gretzky or even lemieux is doing a serious in justice to the game. How old are you twelve?

That Torontoe deal is totally whack...

it'd have to be one of Marner/ Matthews plus Reilly... to even have a chance... throw in one of Kadri/ Brown/ Kapanen to boot...

NJ would be Hischier/ Vatanen plus this years 1st
Canucks would be Petterssen/ Juolevi/ and 1st

what do you mean "even Lemieux"??? Lemieux Orr Richard Gretzky would be in the same level... but if you asked me I'd take Lemieux over Gretzky at both their peaks... Lemieux didn't get the phantom second assists Gretzky did in Edmonton cuz in the US stats people actually cared to get the stats right... not like the amateur scorekeepers running around in Canuckistan….

I won't argue with lemieux being on par with gretzky. You may very well be right
