Gillis tinkered with a championship calibre club...he didn't hang his balls out and get a big fish or two to really seal the deal !
- Bullfrog77

That championship calibre team missed the playoffs 2/3 seasons before he got there, and all but one since he was canned.

Quite the dynasty he rode to the playoffs.

I managed to interpret what he was saying, must be my years of practise being a drunk.

Gillis added key pieces. Hamhuis, Malholtra, Samuellson to name a few.

We won the president's trophy 2 years in a row, didn't just take a long playoff run.

- golfingsince

Yes. Gillis had one thing he was great at....correctly identifying what the team needs or is lacking and getting the correct player to do it. He acquired 6 players for the cup run and all were dead on slam dunk fits.

Nonis had 1 thing he was smokin good at, goaltending.....acquiring Luongo in his early GMing and drafting Schneider. Did the same in TO. Both teams were set up for years.

I don’t have to have it. I haven’t posted on a computer in the last year. That’s the reason I haven’t changed it

I post at work and won’t use my comp. or after work on my phone. I’m never home. I use my laptop on planes and that’s it. I’m constantly on the go! Have a home office computer but it’s covered in dust. I’m back in Arizona for awhile In a couple weeks. I’ll try and murder the Trump then

Yep...plus Higgins Rome and Ehrhoff and Torres and Lapierre.

without those 7-8 additions there ain't no cup run.

Sure Gillis handcuffed the club with NTC's and poor drafting but he knew how to add pieces of need like it or hate it.

He added him as a 3rd liner.

He did score 43 points in the first year of his first deal under Gillis where he made less than $2 million.

On his 2nd deal it was 4 years /$10 million. He scored 75 points in the first 2 years, hardly a crippling contract. He was a really poor fit for the team at the end, but again hardly the reason the team sucked.

The team sucked because they held onto players for too long, not just Higgins, and had nobody in the system to replace the ones that were aging badly.

Gillis followed what the Flames did after their cup run in 2004...locked up the 9-10 'core guys' that got them there (with NTCs) expecting to get back to the cup final in successive years. It handcuffed the team for alot of years but if we had actually won that cup in 2011 with the additions Gillis made no one would have gave a shat anyways.

This started out as a comparison between Quinn and Gillis Cup run teams. It quickly turned into the Gillis loyalists discussion.

lol I'm far from a Gillis loyalist but credit where it's due regardless of the mess he put us in.
