No such thing as a Gillis loyalist. Just some folks reminding the mob that Gillis is no better or worse than all of the other clowns we’ve had. Quinn included.
They’ve all (frank)ed up. No one is immune to criticism. |

Maybe not immune but it's easier to shift the blame to ownership or the past so as to make the present seem better. |

lol I'm far from a Gillis loyalist but credit where it's due regardless of the mess he put us in. - LordHumungous
Agreed. I actually struggled with the dismissal of Gillis. I thought given the success of his teams that he should have been allowed to rebuild his team but alas, that was a minute ago......

Yup, each had their highs and lows. Same for all the GMs in the league over the years, they have their strengths and weaknesses, and all get canned eventually.

In all fairness to Gillis, I don't believe his boss was allowing for a rebuild at that time, due to certain players being on the team. |

Your comparison to the Flames run leads me to believe you think he signed a bunch of the core players to deals immediately AFTER the 2011 cup run, which isn’t true. Not that I’m defending Gillis, just the facts. Sedins, Kesler, Edler, Luongo, Hamhuis, etc. all signed deals prior to the 2011 season.
The Sedins signed a five year deal in 2009, which took them to the end of the 2013/14 season. It was the next contract that was the poopty one. Edler also signed a four year deal in 2009, which never hurt the club. Kesler and Luongo 2010. |

This jack ass wanted no part of a rebuild or to help the kids coming up like what was done for him. |

I'm not saying he signed them all in one season lol I'm actually not totally sure when all the NTC's took place all I know is that all those NTCs hurt the club long-term regardless. |

All those guys were signed to great contracts for the cup run and the two presidents trophies, where he messed up was the contracts after those ones. The Sedins specifically, they were 34 when he signed them again with NMC’s. |

I call that trade a big win. Kesler got Sutter and Pearson so far. Vegas taking Sbisa and not Gaunce. Kesler's contract a massive hinderance to Anaheim now and the rebuild would have started even later. Another win for Benning |

Thats a very good point and really unfortunate because I believe that Gillis would do a fine job of rebuilding, although we probably wouldnt have EP..... |

Gillis was so bad at drafting that this team would be still 8 years from finishing the rebuild. That's after drafting near the bottom for the last 5 out of 6 years. |

Ugh, while I cant disagree that his track record was poor, Im sure he wouldve found a way to be in a better position today than they are because of FA's agenda..... |

Just my opinion but I think he’d have put a lot more focus on the draft as the team started to decline and he was picking 1-5th instead of 25-30th. He’s admitted he didn’t make changes soon enough. |

Everybody knows what MG left JB with. NTC for guys who refused to waive them and Bo Horvat and Chris Tanev. A prospect pool that pretty sure Gaunce was the best prospect after Horvat.
If you don't draft well, you aren't going to have a very good team. |

He had draft picks. He made almost the same number of picks as Benning has and made bad picks. |

This particular quote is short-sighted. It was these decisions that allowed Gillis to sign players at a discount and put together the team he did. For sure it handcuffed the team down the road but they were trying to win a Cup and he used every advantage he could in the present to put that team together.
You have to let the NTC clause thing go. Means nothing without context.
Youre also making the assumption that changes wouldnt have been made to scouting. I cant say that he wouldve but also cant say that he wouldnt. Gillis was before his time in terms of analytics, scheduling, team diet etc...
I'm pretty sure at some point, he wouldve figured that he scouting dept wasnt cuttin git.... |

Yeah totally, let's just give MG the benefit of the doubt here and freak out about the current GM for his weaknesses.

Yes he did, from way worse draft positions though. |
