Getting a taste of success in the playoffs seems more likely to convince him to sign with a perennial contender than to resign with a team that barely squeeked into the playoffs and is losing a lot of major pieces this off-season. |

We don't know that they'll be losing major pieces. Also they were still a decent team before they got Duchene, so if they just lose Panarin, they could still be fine. If anything, they really underperformed in the regular season too. Duchene isn't gonna be one to go for broke, he just wants a team that's committed to winning.

One two punch of Duchene and Dubois up the middle seems pretty good... |

He'll be a bigger fish in Columbus than he'd be elsewhere. This team is an up and comer.
Losing Panarin and the Bob father won't be too bad with all the talent around that club. |

I see Duchene signing in CBJ, they’ll have a lot of cap room and might be a bit desperate to sign him if Panarin leaves. With Panarin and Bob gone, the Jackets would also be a worse team which could make the pick high. Guess it all depends on who wants Duchene this year. |

Guys leave the Stanley Cup winners and the runner ups for more money when they hit free agency. CBJ won one round. Anything can happen. |

Surprised there is not more analysis of the impending crunch. An increasing number of teams are CAP paralyzed. They will need to move out bodies in order to sign their own RFAs and UFA's. Some teams will be offering incentives as they try to trade big contracts.
On the other side, there is a potential record number of UFAs on the market looking for max contracts.
Some very good players are going to be left on the sidelines. The top guys always get their money. Opportunities will be available for teams with big CAP space if they sit in the weeds and wait.
Ottawa is going to be a bottom feeder for the next two seasons. Do you really want a veteran player who would be anxious to come here and play for a lottery team? No way! Play the kids and add a few character journeymen to help them learn the NHL game. |

I hope they take a guy who's more offensively minded. As oppose to always taking the safer 2 way player |

which "perennial contender" has enough cap space to add an 8-9 million dollar center this off season? most of the top teams are going to be hell bent to try and re-sign their own RFAs (Toronto, wpg, tampa, cgy, VGK, Bos), the rest of the "perennial contenders" are already hard up against the cap, or too much so to go "all in" on Duchene (Stl, SJ, Pitt, Wash). the only teams that will have the $$ to spend on him, and who have a need for him, are those "bubble teams" (NYI, CBJ, Car, etc) |

I'm confused about how the draft order works, as I was wondering where teams eliminated in the first round would be draft as well.
Here's what I read:
https://www.draftsite.com/nhl/rules/
Doesn't that mean that all the teams eliminated in the first round of the playoffs would be picking before Columbus (OTT)? Making the absolute earliest they could pick 24th overall? |

That is indeed what is said at that link, but it is wrong. Only the final 4 picks are determined by playoff results. |

the final 4 pick 28-31....picks 1-27 are given to the remaining teams based on how they finished in the standings.
for example, Tampa finished 1st overall but didn't make the conf finals, so they get pick 27 |

Good to know, thanks for the clarification. |

If they opt for a more dynamic offensive-minded forward, look at maybe Ryan Suzuki, Bobby Brink, or Jakob Pelletier as prime options. What I really don't want to see them do is pick some kind of 'safe' winger, because that's a complete waste of time with a first round pick... or second round pick, for that matter.

I know I pump the tires of Halifax players a lot, but Raph Lavoie in Halifax is ALL offense. Kind of reminds me of Kovalev (when he was still good). he's a bit of a floater in his own zone, but the kid has RIDICULOUS skill with the puck. he's a projected top 20 pick I believe.
he had 32g 73pts in the reg season (73gp) and in the playoffs he has 19g 30pts in 20gp.
he's big, fast, skilled....and he's a center which is a position where Ottawa lacks skill |

So Columbus has netted the Sens a first round pick with the hope of another in 2020 if he resigns. So What are the potential scenarios for a first round Sharks exit?...and if Karlsson resigns? |

Dont we also have their 2nd from this year from the Dzingel trade......or was that a 2020 |

Yup.
2020 Second Round Pick
2021 Second Round Pick
Duclair
for
Dzingel
7th Round Pick Calgary
In terms of what they gave away (Dzingel) this may have been the best return. |

Karlsson has to re-sign for Ottawa to get an extra pick. If he does that PLUS they make the SCF, they get SJ's 2021 1st round pick. If he re-signs but they don't make the SCF, it's just a 2nd round pick
