Great write-up as always, Todd. I was unaware these two players were so close in some aspects |

Thanks Todd, nice work!
Hischier for Sutter and the 10th pick. No room for him with Hughes on the way.

Two players every team would love to have. |

And this would be where numbers and charts don't tell the real story. At the moment, Petterson is clearly a much better player and that is proven by the eye test. Those charts don't count into effect that all some guys need is one chance, Petterson makes things happen and when he gets his "chances" they go in. Idc how many chances some guy creates if they didn't go in. I still think this class will be determined in a few years, I wouldn't sleep on Nolan. |

I could just as easily say that Nico is better by the eye test in that he always makes the right play. He never turns over the puck and always makes the smart pass while it's there and is always on defense. Petterson, as a dynamic offensive player, is prone to defensive lapses and may tend to turn over the puck.
See how that works? You can't say one great player is better than another just because they play well. Of course they do. Stats come into it, too. |

Jack Hughes. - MartysBetter88
Petterson vs Hughes should be a much more interesting comparison in a few years. |

Both are great young centers, no question, at this point I’d definitely go with Pettersson first overall in a redraft though. Patrick wouldn’t even be top four lol, sorry about your lucky Philly
Pettersson
Hischier
Heiskanen
Makar

Anyone who says Pettersson is a defensive liability straight up doesn't watch him play. Yup he's had some gaffes like any younger player, Nico included. But he's also had some of the best displays of defensive acumen I've ever seen from a 20 year old.

You're probably right, but the main point was that his reasoning of "Petterson is better because eye test. He scores on more chances" is not enough to make a definitive statement about the players as a whole. Petterson is probably a better offensive player, but Nico is probably better defensively. Even there though, the difference is so small that the "eye test" is just not enough. |

Nico has been really impressive defensively. He's a great two way player despite having not filled out that much. Never gives up on a play.
Not saying he's better then Pettersson. Just saying.
Drafts are obviously very inexact sciences even for the experts. Vancouver did a great job and picked a gem. NJ did a great job by picking the right player between Nico and Nolan who were projected to be the best players. What are we arguing here?

It might be better for the Devils to draft Kakko so when they pick Lafrenière in 2020 they won't have too many centers. |

Yeah not amazing, but he needs time to get going with people. He produced with Caufield and Zegras because he played consistently with them and on an even rotation. Here he's with Kane and JVR one minute, on the 4th line the next, and sitting the one after. Hard to get going like that. |
