I thought that was GAR?
- Sabresfan-365

Don’t they both?

I could be totally wrong but for WAR don’t they basically just take how many GAR a player is and convert it to how many wins for that team it would equate to?

WAR consists of the following eight components for skaters: offensive shot rates, defensive shot rates, offensive shot quality, defensive shot quality, shooting, penalties taken, penalties drawn and zonal transitions.

GAR:

The short version is that player value is decomposed into six categories: even strength offense, even strength defence, power play offense, penalty drawing, penalty taking, and faceoffs.

I wonder what defines “shooting” and zone transitions?

I have no idea what the hell is a zonal transition.

Defense to offense I assume?

I suppose it depends which WAR model we're talking about. But I know for a while there the GAR model that was floating around twitter gave equal value to FO/pen diff as it did to things like EV scoring.

I believe it still does.

There's more to the WAR stats that can be found here:

That’s what I’d assume.

Which seems like that would be skewed towards players who get heavy D zone starts?

If you rarely start in D zone how can you really have opportunities to transition?

It also includes the neutral zone as well. Check the link I posted in the reply to 365.

I suspect that will get overhauled very soon. I know points aren't everything but the same community that beats the faceoff percentage doesnt matter horse to death can't be weighing it equal to even strength production.

I've never been a huge fan of the wins above replacement methodology or thought process overall.

Yeah, the dude you and I converse with on twitter all the time seems like a smart dude but he takes WAR/GAR as gospel but doesn’t take individual production into consideration at all.

It has to be a mix

As long as you don’t complain when Tage becomes an effective middle 6 winger on this club and I “break my arm patting my back” like I do with 80% of my takes we’ll be alright.

Is it the same guy that posted a WAR chart on Twitter comparing Meier and Marner as if they're the same player?

doesn't this cut both ways? If we had players who could make plays, we'd have more goals. It's the whole reason teams invest heavy in centres instead of wingers, they usually ride their coattails.
- Sabresfan-365

Do u think that’s our issue though?
I think the only “goal scorers” we have are Skinner & Jack

I too think Meier is outstanding, but Marner is definitively better at this point.
