Was Staal’s production slowed because of injury though? I don’t think it was. Perry, on the other hand, has recent bad injury problems and has a lot of miles on those tires. I didn’t look, but I’d imagine the playoff disparity in GP is a fat one. - RickJames77
Staal's issue was complacency imo. He got way too comfortable near the end there in Carolina. They traded for his brother, kept his poop brother in the org. GM Jack Eichel would be proud. |

Kessel is a freak. The guy doesn’t work out, but never misses a game and can still skate quite fast. He’s gonna play 1800 games, easily. - Steven_Seagull
Ahhhh, there it is again - the notion that Kessel doesn't work out.
All goes back to his statement that he probably didn't skate more than 5-6 times all summer - a little uncommon, but not unheard of for hockey players in the offseason.
For the record, that summer in question, Phil tested 3rd highest amongst all Leafs at the training camp fitness tests - 1st amongst everyone who made the team. This is a fact confirmed by none other than Damien Cox.
The dude works out. It's time to stop the hatin'. |

Ya tough to say. Perry could have a bounce back like ah Eric staal and be really helpful. - bryant
I think Perry is just declining. I think he'd be a good support piece who could score up to 20 goals on a cheap salary and provide some grit. |

I could see him playing with kadri. They wouldn’t be the fastest line but they would be feisty and could bang in some goals. |

Yep, i could even see him playing with Matthews or JT at some points and getting some PP time in front of the net.

I dont see why it wouldnt be worth a shot on a cheap 1-1.5M a year deal. He provides grit(unlike Marleau) that the Leafs dont have, and could chip in for goals. No brainer IMO. |

Cant be concerned with that, if he can help you sign him if available. I truly doubt he'd get the Marleau treatment. |

Then the Leafs dont get him, but it appears to be extremely likely that he will get bought it. He has a full NMC, and a large salary. What contender is taking that on who he would accept a trade to? List is pretty much zero. |

it would have to be at the number you could bury and not affect the cap |

Sounds like, he's willing to go anywhere.. So if the Ducks eat some of the contract, he can be traded pretty easily. |

Not necessarily denying that, but it doesn't mean his production will continue at the rate it was at during his prime, where as were looking at Seguin's numbers that are mostly prior to his prime and comparing them to Kessel's career, which has already seen his most productive years. Have we seen Seguin's most productive years to this point? I doubt it. - RickJames77
Seguin isn't a kid anymore. He's 27. And kessel just had his best season. The only point I'm trying to make is that production wise from that trade kessel has either been equal to or better. And bring age to it...ok, what about free agency and salary. To me they are a wash. |

And the fact that the leafs needed a center.
missed out on 3 cheap controllable years and several other controllable years.
Leafs wouldnt have 1.2m of wasted space on the cap either.....which we need.
Stats wise its close....and both have won cups with other teams, post leafs. - Fakepartofme
Seguin makes almost 2m more than kessel. |

Seguin makes almost 2m more than kessel. - mykokes
That's a more modern contract. Not to mention it hasn't even kicked in yet, ignores age and the increase of the cap. Seguin had a cap hit of 5.75M from 2014 - 2019 and Kessel's was 8M. Seguin had 169G, 211A, for 380pts in 389GP whereas Kessel had 135G, 229A, and 364pts in 410GP. So who again was more valuable and for 2.25M less? And still, it holds true that those were more formative years for Seguin and prime years for Kessel, where Seguin still outpaced him on a worse team sans Crosby & Malkin. |
