I'm kinda wondering if we will ever see guys agree to a mutual termination of contract, rather than be a dead weight at the end of their careers.
Case in point: Lupul.
He was sent to Robidas Island for the final two years of his contract:
2016-17: $5.25 million salary
2017-18: $3.75 million salary
Would he not have been better off agreeing to a mutual termination of contract in the summer of 2017?
Work yourself into game shape, sign for $1.5 million somewhere on a one-way contract, and keep playing.
He had career earnings of over $50 million - why not risk $4 million and bet on yourself? - Atomic Wedgie
maybe he did, and his bet was I would lose a lot of money so I stay as is.
Also, I would think the PA would not want that to happen. |

The media ass-kissing of Marleau is hilarious.
https://www.sportsnet.ca/...areful-marleau-treatment/
He's gotten his butt kissed daily and the Leafs gave him far more $ than any player. But gotta be respectful about a trade...
Get that (frank)er off the team. 6.3 million for that. Christ. |

I don't love the guy as a player, but mykokes is just dead wrong here. - RickJames77
The trade was bad from a Leafs standpoint, but the Bruins then trading Seguin for the return they got was worse. |

Bruins (frank)ed that great trade they made so bad. Seguin and Hamilton traded by ages 21 for so little.
And Boston could have had a great young franchise piece for Hamilton with that 1st rounder and screwed that up so bad. |

When is Dubas going to do something - senstroll
hopefully soon, I trust that Shanahan will NOT allow Dubas to put Marner on the back burner or procrastinate - LIKE HE DID WITH NYLANDER.
all the nice guy speak at the end of the season... needs to be put aside and a contract needs to get done.
I believe if Marner doesn't get done before the draft ... Dubas is putting himself at a further disadvantage.... effectively reducing his(Dubas') to make deals to fill in the rest of the roster.
I would be very happy if Dubas makes a deal prior to the draft which signals his progress on:
i) either RFA signings (Marner, Johnsson and Kapanen)
ii) the CAP alleviation front
iii) the defense core re-construction
Of course a single deal could be made which would help on severals fronts - e.g. Nylander for a defender. |

I have no issues if Dubas trades Nylander
He knows his value and would be getting a great player back - senstroll
You're forgetting Leaf luck, Nylander goes on to win the Hart and the D we get has to retire due to injury after 20 games. |

Nylander gets minimum 30 goals, 70 points next season, has a shot at 80.
His shooting % was 5. Will not happen again. |

despite what we heard from the media... it would seem Lupul was treated fairly well from a financial perspective.... being paid out his contract in full.... if he was bought out he would have gotten less, and would NOT have had the delicious cocktails on Robidas Island.
Lupul knew he wasn't physically robust enough to come back again... and given his injury history... I believe the Leafs handled that as well as they could for the player. Was Lupul disappointed, for sure, who wouldn't be.
THey may have to take a similar tack with Marleau IF he can't be economically moved. The guy has one year remaining... the most effective approach may be to give him and his wife and kids water front condo on Robidas Island. Marner can serve drinks if he holds out.

Nylander had his two big point seasons with Matthews. Its unlikely he'd get as good a player to play with in Carolina or Anaheim or Vancouver or wherever.
and its a reach to assume he's going to get 80 points... he wilted under the pressure and expectations this past season... after resting the first 1/3 of the season... .he could equally wilt under the pressure which will NO DOUBT be on him from the first day of camp...

I could see something being included, but it's a difficult prospect. I mean, teams have the ability to buy a player out - that's the out that lets the player get paid the money owed to them.
If the CBA included mutual termination, teams would find ways to try and force a player to accept the mutual termination rather than affect their cap (media pressure, external pressure, peer pressure - whatever they need to use). I think that's what they want to avoid.
Sort of like how an NMC lets a team sign a player to less money, but the NMC isn't worth the paper it's written on when the team decides you've become inconvenient.

Dubas can't make him sign. There is a agent who is working on behalf of Marner that factors into this
If he cant get him signed for the number he wants to, then it drags on. Not much you can do unless you just give him what they ask for
