Hard to disagree with this take. |

Maybe a somewhat realistic offseason?

That trade is horrible for us |

I was all for getting pk now I am glad that we didnt. An article in the athletic had quotes from around the league...... Woof. Apparently he is in rapid decline. Whoever thought Montreal would end up winning that trade long term? |

After reading Vogl's article in The Athletic and seeing it written down how much the Sabres need I now think Risto gets dealt and should be. I was against it before but they have so many holes to fill and 10 mil in cap space and few chips to use in trade bait I think they might have to deal him.
Center they have Mitts #2
LW Victor Olofson #2
RW Kyle Okposo #2
and even goalie is a bit a shaky

Buffalo has the looks of a pretty strong team in the future, unfortunately it’s 2-3 years away, but I like the idea of spreading out talent on all lines.
Olofsson/eichel/Reinhart
Skinner/mitts/hopefully good RW
Davidson/cozens/Asplund
Dahlin/Borgen
Samuelson/Risto
Johnson/montour
We already have all that (other then RW#2 which we can acquire).
That’s two scoring lines, a great shutdown tough 3rd line and a puck mover and stay at home Defenseman on every D pairing.
Frustrating to wait but that core should have a great cap and be good for years if it hits potential. That RW prob would be addressed in draft and we can trade any prospect or player not on this list. 4th line made up with anyone who is left (Pekar, Rodriguez). Hopefully a compliance BO in new contract and okposo will be gone |

Rw is a mess. I'd overpay on a short term deal for zuccarelo or dzingel.

Why I said unfortunately we have to wait. This year is gonna be rough I think. I don’t want to rush cozens either just to “win now”. Are team isn’t built for that right now and I don’t want to force bad contracts on it to try. |

Larsson and Grigs are conspicuously absent. And that's a good thing. |

Botts has a lot to do. He knows he has change the roster and to do trades he doesn't have a lot of capital to work with. He can trade for Vesey and maybe another small trade but I wouldn't expect much.
He has $19M to spend and needs to get some RFAS's done. He also has a major selling job to convince UFA's to sign here. He has a difficult task. It wouldn't surprise me if Girgs, Larry and Sobotka are back and that won't make fans happy.
I hope he can do a trade with some of the cap strapped teams. I'm not buying the rumors of Risto but maybe he has to move him to upgrade the roster. It will leave a huge hole at RD though.

Larry actually has decent metrics and is a fine 4th liner |

Botts has time. I’m sure he has some lines in the water.
I would not have given up a first rounder for J.T Miller in a draft that is comparable to 2015. P.K Subban is a good player but that cap hit was gross for a guy who is already declining. Wanted nothing to do with Marleau. People are already wanting to jump off a bridge and it’s June 23rd. We acquired Skinner in August last summer. Let’s assess the roster come September 1st. |

Agree about the unfortunate wait. It will be rough. Next offseason is easier to make big moves. Botts will fire up the tank once more for 19-20. |

It wouldn't surprise me if botts waits out the fa market. Few teams have both cap space and willingness to spend to the cap. No thrilling names but good enough to get by for the year. Nobody should be agonizing over who is going to be taking risto's minutes. |

You wouldn't have taken marleau for a first coming with him? |

Not when you have Sobotka that does the same job at 2.75 already. No need for 2. 4c’s |

You're probably right, and I'm likely being unfair. It just gets tiresome seeing the same names and faces on a basement dwelling team. And what new names appear, offer very little real help.
Skinner is the rare exception, except fans have difficulty even enjoying that one due to the big numbers he received. |

He’s going to be bought out. We don’t want that against our cap. (NHL media mentioned that around the time of the trade) |

These teams have to spend just to get to the floor
Colorado- $14M (Rantanen and Compher RFA)
Ottawa- $12M (Ceci and White)
Columbus- $9M (Werenski, Murray)
New Jersey- $4.3 (Zacha, Butcher, Carrick)
These teams are in cap holy hell
Vegas- $1.6M over (Wild Bill, Gusev RFA)
Pittsburgh- $4.7 in space (Pettersson, Aston-Reese)
Arizona- $6.2 in space ( Cousins, Archibald, Crouse)
Tampa Bay- $10.6 (Point, Paquette) |

This is how I see it ..... Sobotka is a 2.75 million dollar 4C. A lot of teams have cap issues right now and are over the cap or at the cap.
Who wants him? I just don’t see anyone who would trade for him
If you get rid of Larry and Sobotka. Who is your 4C? Erod? |

You're rignt, nobody will want him. That's why we will loan him out somewhere.
We've got a pile of fourth line players. Not at all a concern. |
