I agree that they are good gambles and the kind we need to make to compete. BUT when we are using the horrible Hayes deal as the baseline I guess every deal looks good!
That’s like saying the Kessel deal was good because look what Adam Larsson cost |

Are you comparing these RFA contracts to bad UFA signings and declaring that these RFA signings are better than the UFA signings?

Reminds of this horrible recent Yost article that uses pretty math to determine that long term contracts are bad as players age. His math was great. But he only analyzed the 10 worst contracts. He completely ignored any other contracts in his analyses. He briefly mentioned Crosby and such(ignored Ovechkin) but never bothered to use any numbers in his analyses other than the 10 worst cherry picked WAR players of that age/signing group. |

I'd say the Hayes deal is just an indication that the dvorak deal is going to be good, not that that deal alone proves anything. He's also a somewhat comparable player in terms of style and career potential. + One of anything is an anecdote, not proof. |

It seems like some of these gambles can definitely work out in the Coyotes' favor, but the problem with gambling is that sometimes you lose. A team like Arizona can't really afford a bunch of bad long term contracts.
If this is the way Chayka wants to do things, you just need to hope it's not really gambling, because he's just that good at evaluating the career trajectory of his players. |

Maybe it's just luck?
