"and coach Rod Brind'Amour regularly told the media that he deferred to Bales to identify the starting goaltender for a given night's game."
Remember when Housley didn't play Ullmark back-to-back after Ullmark only let in 1 goal because they lost?
I remember
I think they'll be fine |

I wouldn't call it horrible, but it's definitely not fantastic. It's also often too crowded.
Once you've seen it, the novelty wears of fairly quickly. - buffalofan19
Agreed. The atmosphere is a lot of fun, but it's typically packed, the prices are high and the food is average to above average.
It really is a novelty restaurant, like a Buffalo sports version of Hard Rock. I like going once a year to soak in a game at the bar, maybe get an appy or two. But I'd never recommend it to out of towners, especially Buffalo ex-pats. |

Every now and then it pops in to my head that Phil Housley had Vladimir Sobotka on the ice for 3v3 OT against Auston Matthews. lol. |

This was one of his more laughable concepts. A far cry from 'needing' Sobotka in OT. The kid (frank)ing loses a 1-0 game and you need to switch. I'd say it's arbitrary, but it's not because it followed a simple pattern. If you lose, you don't start again. Regardless of how you played. Hutton didn't have the same onus on him as Ullmark. For (frank) knows why.
Guy was in over his (frank)ing head. |

Dammit! I responded in the old blog, but I am pasting it here because it is germane to this discussion, as an out of towner defending 716:
Most Sabres games I attend are road games so I just love being in a bar for pre-game pints where everyone is a Sabres fan. That's a rare treat for me. I'm usually the guy in that type of bar in NY or Boston getting dirty looks and poop talk from the home fans. "1st & 1st!"

It seems like the type of thing where the goalies or the team or someone was female doging about who was playing, and Housley said "alright, I'm gonna make it easy. Whoever wins, plays." And then he "had" to stick to what he said.
Or he just said and did things that made no sense and was in over his head as you said. In any case, it's over |

The Blues had the fewest (or close to) shots against in the league and they have a knack for pushing players out to generate low quality shot attempts. Maybe that was some of the magic they experienced with Hutton? They clearly did not see long term potential in him.
I hope he has a great year as a splitter with Ulmark. Not sure who will be the marquee yet |

Some say it was a fever dream, some say it really happened, like when Disco started Larry against McDavid during the first matchup |

i think the problem is neither is a true NHL starter and both are more top end back ups or at least have the potential for that.. we need to hit on UPL |

Absolutely. His overall numbers were worse in Nashville but they played a different style so he was winning. Anyone who thought his numbers in Buffalo would approach what he did in St Louis was misguided. |

Easily one of the board highlights from the Housley years. It spawned memes galore, and continues to do so to this day

Several locations were changed after that. The Lockport twins were named sometime shortly thereafter as well. |

Ullmark still has a chance to be a true NHL starter, although his window is rapidly closing. This is a make it or break it year for him. |

I really did think the fact that Botterill only had $3 million of cap space put into goaltending was a sign he knew what he was doing. I still like the fact that it's only $4 million this year. That being said, defense and coaching needs to make up that gap in order for it to work. - buffalofan19
Good point. If you look back at what was available and Lehners inevitable departure, it was a good signing for sure. |

The fact that they did nothing in goal is more proof I think that this is a stealth rebuild year. I'm fairly certain the plan is to see UPL for the last 10-15 games and see if he can be a #1 next year. These two are just filling up the roster until then.
Almost no one mentions goal, but if the two goalies just had an average gaa of 2.80 (not great), we give up 20 less goals or so last year. That's halfway to being good.

Love the Lockport Larry nickname. Pegulaville should be ashamed for not copping it. |
