I have argued and I still believe that with the new pads out there they cause more harm than good

Back in the day shoulder pads were just a slight cushion for the body checker and the player getting checked

Nowadays they have all this carbon composite D3O ultra foam in them.

Basically the checker doesn't feel a thing so they go faster and try to hit harder. I guarantee if they felt anything when delivering those checks they wouldn't be going so hard at each other.

Put modern players in equipment from the 80's and with modern medical practices and the concussions would go down a ton.

It would slow the game down a ton though

I agree 100%. I grew up wearing the skimpy shoulder pads so you weren't reckless because being physical wasn’t pain free. When I was older Donzis (not sure how to spell) came along. Anyone else remember those? They were lightweight football style hockey shoulder pads. I never wore them but teammates did, those guys started tossing their bodies around without a care.

Imagine if today’s NFL players wore leather helmets with no face masks? There would be far fewer injuries because the game would be played much differently.

The advancements in equipment with the intent to protect the player also enabled that player to become a far more dangerous weapon.

Yeah, I'm not saying they're not for a reason. Just that they're another implement that causes devastation. Though they could at least add some padding over the hard bit at the elbow.
