How are we sure of that. I don't know why people believe that 'calling up the kids' is a surefire solution.
It's always nice to think so, I just find it odd that we are all so certain that we can backfill our lineup with all new guys, take out the trash and simply be a better team. Would I like to see it, just to know if we're right or wrong? Absolutely. But these men, all of them, are here to win. They will be fired if they don't. I hardly think that anyone in that front office would purposefully keep a guy down if they were 100% certain that player would consistently make this team better.
Rail on some of the bottom of the lineup, it's justified. But some of those guys truly serve a purpose, even if it's Dzone draws and PK.

Lazar and Asplund showed more this preseason then Sbotoka and Okposo have in some time.
Teams almost always make the safe play when it comes to constructing bottom half of the roster players. It does not mean it is the smart play, at all.
Nobody has said it is a certainty as a solution, but we have seen enough of the garbage the past year or more to know something has to change.
Waiting for a certainty means waiting forever. Why wait? |

Preseason is tricky. They're meaningless games, where players aren't doing everything they would or wouldn't do during a regular season game. I'm not advocating that Sobotka or Okposo should be on this roster. I want them gone as much as the next guy, but to win a spot like that, especially in the preseason, you don't just have to be good, like Lazar and Asplund were, you need to be great. And neither player was that. Like I said yesterday, this season is going to hinge on the performance of a select few players up front (The Fat One, Oloffsson, and Thompson). If they don't make meaningful strides, it's not going to matter one bit who is in the bottom six. |

Figured this would happen based on the line combinations. He definitely had a great camp. |

Yeah.
Asplund dropped down the lineup every day. If he was so great, that wouldn't have happened.
Cozens is going to be a wonderful player soon. He held his own, despite being an 18 year old Yukonian (frank)face moron who's skill tops out as Brandon Dubinsky.
Lazar is curious. Let's wait and see. |

When the bar is as low as it is with Sobotka and Okposo, being good is plenty to supplant those two. |

I don't understand how it's unclear that both Asplund and Lazar deserve a spot in the lineup over any of the retreads (Okposo, Larsson, Girgs, Sobotka) by their play so far this preseason.
They have looked markedly better than the 4 bums I named.
This having to look like an all star nonsense is ridiculous, especially when the players they would be replacing are poopsacks. - kingcong39

Sure, but Lazar is new, he is a fresh face and that’s why people like him more. Lazar has been worse than Girgs and Larsson the last few years.
I wouldn’t expect a lot from him. Girgs/Larsson/Lazar are interchangeable.
The team needs the top 6 to step up.
We will see how that goes.
Johansson at center, I think will be a disappointment. |

It’s easy to look good when players aren’t giving even 50% in some of these games.
We know what Sobodka is, and it’s not good. |

None of this was performance based. Okposo is not on the second line due to performance. Cozens is on the roster instead of Mitts if we're going by performance - and for the record I'm fine with Cozens going down. Asplund was never going to be given a chance to beat the twins, and it looks like perhaps Sobotka's job was never in doubt

If there is genuine competition for the roster spots, and NONE of them were great, then what? |

Again, it's evident the organization was content with last season. No job was actually on the line in training camp. Still, to this date, only Pominville and and Housley have been held responsible for the worst team in the NHL over the last 50 games.
And we are one game from opening night. If that isn't the most incredible thing about this whole off season I don't know what is. |

Sorta. The competition, regardless of the quality, is the same across the board for all players. So the argument will always be, if the competition was better, or worse, would that bare an effect on his performance vs others?
If comp was better, would that make him the worst player on the ice? It's a reasonable question to ask I suppose. In the same line of question though, could you assume that Scandella would be better against better comp? |

“It’s quite clear for us that every player here has the opportunity to continue to leave his mark and however the decisions will fall they won’t be based only strictly on these two games,” Krueger said. “We have a bank of history here whether it’s last season observing what went on there through the summer and training camp and it’s not going to be one moment now that will push a player one way or the other.” |
