Because the deck was stacked against the kids making it. Cozens has a strong game and is rewarded with 8 minutes the next game because he was in danger of making the scrubs look bad.
Has Asplund been gifted a game at 2RW like Okposo?
How about Lazar and Thompson
No, the competition was rigged. It's unfair horse poop of the highest order - jcragcrumple

Regardless of where Laine plays, does he follow the current trend and sign for 3 years at $7 per... I think you can say Mitch is the out layer... Tchuck, Point, the other guy. All in that ballpark... gets him to the new tv deal... hopefully the kid bets on himself, regardless of where he plays... |

I honestly think our (justified) disgust at Okposo and Sobotka being on this roster made these other guys look better than they really are. Yes, Cozens had a game where he didn't look out of place, but he didn't exactly look head-and-shoulders better than anyone either. He didn't even get on the score sheet. Now, I would not have been against the nine-game tryout, and Botterill has taken the approach that NHL development can be better for some players (see #37 Jabba the Hutt, and Tage Thompson), but the fact is that Cozens didn't play in such a way that made it impossible to send him down, and to be honest, neither did Asplund or Lazar. Even in an "open competition", in order to unseat the incumbent, you don't just need to be better than he is, you need to be miles better than he is. Veteran bias necessitates it. |

I understand the way teams operate, but let's not pretend this was a competition. It wasn't. That's my point |

Asplund 3 games, 0 goals 1 assist, -1, 13:29 average TOI
Okposo 3 games, 0 goals 0 assist, -3, 13:09 average TOI
Thompson 3 games, 2 goals 1 assist, +/- 0, 14:25 av TOI
Lazar 3 games, 0 goals 0 assist, -3, 13:47 average TOI
Cozens 3 games, 0 goals 0 assist, -1, 12:56 average TOI
These stats are from CBS sports. Not sure if it is updated from last night's game, but what stats stand out to you that says which guys earned a spot on opening night?
For what it's worth here's Dahlin's stats:
3 games, 0 goals 3 assists, -5, 20:56 average TOI
The worst +/- on the team. Joker -4, Risto even, and the mighty Nelson was a +4 (as was Miller). |

Every competition is going to have a favorite coming into it. 999 times out of 1,000, it's going to be the veteran. |

All that's left is.. opinions vary.
If Olofsson is cut, I will 100% buy your theory. For everyone else, I've seen zero evidence that other players deserve to supplant existing vets.
Defense will definitely be interesting when everyone is healthy. 8 NHL D and 2 capable AHL D fighting to make it. Borgen is a cusp player atm. |

I'm mad at myself, honestly, for believing - yet again - that the GM meant it when he said it was a competition

I sincerely would like you to prove otherwise. Because no one else here is seeing what you're seeing. What's the competition? Tage? Asplund? Lazar? Tage has made a case, as he always does. The latter two haven't done Richard. |

That would get me to do a 180 on this as well.
None of the players that were cut so far elevated themselves to the standard of Derek Grant, Ultimate Training Camp Titan, let alone played at a level that it was impossible to send them away. |

Okposo just looks so... beat. His play was ugly last night, primarily because of his speed. |

Methinks he should have a heart-to-heart with Dustin Byfuglien. |
