Maybe the issue is that he's being traded for more offense

I'm all for that.

Of course it depends upon who we get.

I doubt that's the case, if I recall he got dinged a little in the EDM game.

I'm torn on the idea of trading Leddy honestly.

On one hand, he's an elite skating defenseman that can move the puck and catch up to most forwards if they get behind the D. That's not an easy thing to find in the NHL.

On the other hand, he's a liability in his own end, would have significant trade value, and would (dependent on the potential contract of a player coming in return) clear out more than enough cap space for the Islanders to get the big 3 RFA's signed without issue.

I'm not as torn. I believe Leddy is fast approaching his uselessness. He's really not in our top 4 anymore and can be replaced on the power play. The time is right to trade him, imho.

I was hopeful with his skillset and these coaches he would finally start to Click. There is still time but the only odd man rushes this season has come from him being a dope.

He's not without warts, but he's extremely far from "useless".

Leddy is a bonafide top-4 defenseman, albeit one that probably belongs on the 2nd pairing. He has no business playing against the McDavid's of the league...but he has a real valuable skill-set. Consider what the Islanders defense would look like without him.

I think it's easy to focus on the negatives of a player, but the drop-off from Leddy to Hickey is pretty significant.

I knew I'd get some pushback for that.

He's not "useless" but you have to give to get and he's the defenseman I'd give. Unless we could trade Boychuk for a good player.

9 years with Tavares and what did they accomplish. One could argue they did better last year without him.
- kindlyrick

Well defensively yes, but saying the Islanders offense wasn’t threatening for years is what my answer was referencing. Not if they did better with JT or not.

Well yeah, you definitely have to give to get. Just have to make sure what you're getting is worth what you're giving. I'm not trading Leddy for a 2nd line guy, even if it makes the offense incrementally better. In that scenario, I'd rather trade him for picks and prospects that they would be able to flip later (or immediately) for a better player.
