That second last paragraph just wasn't necessary in an otherwise good blog haha. Yes, GMJR made some stumble moves and decisions but overall his body of work since taking over has the good far exceeding the bad IMO.

I mean I cant even really be mad at the JJ signing anymore because he picked up Marino on the back end for peanuts.

Didn't watch the game, Simon played great, good for him.

That Sid video was impressive. Sid just undressed Donato. Also don't overlook what ZAR did there, he drew three defenders. That is not an easy thing to do when Crosby is on the ice.

The Pens are now challenging for 1st in the Metro which would put them in the running for the President's Trophy which is the kiss of the death. I'd love 1st in the metro, but not win the President's Trophy.

My only real fear is losing steam later on which happens to plenty of hot teams only to fizzle at the wrong time.

That was damn impressive, but how the hell did Malkin make that pass? How did he know that the second defender (Brodin, I think) was coming to him instead of picking up Rust? How did he know exactly where Rust was? This isn't just "hockey sense," this is borderline telepathy.

LOL, so much sarcasm... yeah, let's lose a few games just to prove you're a bitter sob.

Sid and Geno Machino SHOULD be on NHL Network all day today... wish I could watch it. And ZP hit the nail on the head.

Too much superstition and not enough stats, LOL... though I am just a teeny bit worried they could be peaking too soon...

I don't know if this will matter, but most of the core won't be playing anywhere close to 82 games this season. Unfortunately it's because of injury, but I wonder if it ultimately helps when they hit the playoffs.

Most definitely, I can't explain it either. Things like this happen because of the speed these guys generate. This is one fast team.

I cant believe the B's, 3 points ahead of Pens, have 12 OT loses/points already....7 more loser points than the Pens...

yeah, this nhl system is a joke. In a game where it's impossible to tie you shouldnt ever be behind another team having 2 more wins. The Bruins have 12 points for losing, thats 6 wins that never happened.

@Rino: Statistically speaking that's untrue. When compared to other seeds, the President's Trophy still wins the Cup the majority of the time. The perception is just skewed because it hasn't happend since 2013 and the majority isn't very high because winning the Cup is super (frank)ing hard. The success rate of the President's Trophy winners is 24%.

Any idea what the success rate of the other seeds are?

If it’s higher than 24% since ‘85 when the trophy was first given out I’d be flabbergasted. I’ll also point out that if you broaden this to just 1 seeds it probably gets overwhelmingly in favor of 1. Here’s a thing from 2015 on puck report about seeding. At the time of publishing, divisional champions made the Stanley Cup Finals at an overwhelming rate. The idea that you shouldn’t try to win your devision/President’s trophy because it’s cursed is just ungrounded superstition.

Thanks. This is a good read.

"The only non-division winners to hoist the Cup since the new seeding scenario are New Jersey (5th seed in 1995, 4th seed in 2000), Pittsburgh (4th seed in 2009), Los Angeles (8th seed in 2012, 6th seed in 2014) and Chicago (4th seed in 2015). Interestingly, New Jersey and Pittsburgh both fell short as division champions in the Stanley Cup Final (NJD 2001, PIT 2008), yet won as wildcards."

"Cinderella teams tell an inspiring story but statistics show that clubs seeded 6th through 8th rarely qualify for the Final (9 of 42, 21% chance to qualify) and almost never go home a winner (2/42, 5% chance to win)."

This is wrong. Pittsburgh had the 2nd best record in the league AND the division (behind Washington) in 16/17 and St. Louis finished 3rd in theirs last year.

I would imagine of that 4th being 25% some were division winners...
