BINGO.

Connery was so good in that movie, he made Costner watchable. Amazing!

yeah, certainly hope so, but I don't forsee Tony D's negotiations being easy

they forced him to play for peanuts this year

- jimbro83

I think they might do for Tony what they did for Skjei, at least that is my hope. Signing wise, not trade wise

The AAV will probably be a little higher, but that would be perfect. Jimmy's right, summer negotiations could get ugly. If I'm the Rangers, I reach out now with a nice speech about how a lot has changed since the summer...we said we'd talk, here we are....we want to discuss a deal, etc.

I think they need to do something like this, because if he/his agent are standoffish right away, it lets management know how the summer negotiations are going to go. They should also start talks with Strome. If he's looking for a 5 or 6 year deal, then start looking for a summer trading partner.

I agree with this assessment, but I just feel like Lindgren is a completely different player than Skjei. I think what made Skjei so good at first was also kind of his downfall, he was sort of a jack of all trades, but master of none. He wasn't awful is any particular area, but I'm not sure of what he did best. Lindgren isn't great offensively, but he's going to be a stalwart nasty stay at home defender. He reminds me alot of when Staal was younger and I think he handles the puck quite a bit better than Staal ever did. I think the fact that he knows what his game is, will allow him to continue to grow and hold the fort down until our young guys come up.

I'm not sure how good Lindgren will be long term, but I don't think the same thing happens to him. The market is kinda biased against defensive types anymore and that might hold his contract down a bit too.

- 2sticks1puck

Another difference that should make the extra minutes manageable for Lindgren is the fact that he plays with an absolute star in the making!
Foxy has made me more excited than anyone else on this team this year. And given what we have seen from some of these guys that is saying something!!!

Yeah it will be, just for the fact Skjei signed that what, 2 years ago?

I agree though, Start negotiating or talking now, gives them an idea on what they will do once the season is over. Don't want the Tony stuff dragging into the draft. imo

Possibly, I would like to see Nils maybe do part of the year with the Pack though. Isn't the Swedish ice bigger than over here?

Remember when we would debate who from the left should move over to the right side.

whats the rush ,the nhl allows you to treat A dA with a 1 yr offer NOW ,he's gonna get a great new RFA 2 yr bridge deal IF they cant agree long term ,why rush any of the yg . Defensemen , Skjeis deal showed NOT to rush in signing thinking your saving so much & locking them up ,why not use the system the way its built & keep the contracts in front of them ,not in there pockets ,ever think Skjei lost his need to be hungry & play with an edge when he became 23 yr old 30 mill dollar baby no matter what after 1.5 seasons? let the kids keep producing & get paid on the scale built to use ... this way no bad contracts to guys who dont fulfill potential, why would ya ,they paid him for just the flash ,no substancial body of work.Dont repeat the past

HANK he aint owed nothing but thank you, hes gotten paid & if he dosnt like the biz end of the game, sorry thats the razors edge ,cuts on both sides & very sharp...

Because its not "rushing". Its done in certain cases when young players who management thinks will progress will cost a boat load more after they do a bridge for 2 years. Tony falls into that category. Plus if they can lock him up for a reasonable price, "if" Nils or whoever turns out to be better, it makes Tony's contract very enticing to another club

No offense but Trouba and Staal would be the slowest d pair we could have. Thats was Skjei's best quality, his skating. We cant say that about Trouba or Staal. Smith has actually better wheels. Just sayin

Some thoughts on yesterday:

I am warming to the Kreider extension. 7 years is simply too long and I don't like the multiple years of NTC on the back end. However the AAV is reasonable and I think we now have our Captain going forward.

I am worried that Shesty is going to be out a long time. Davidson stated that he would be re-evaluated in 2 weeks, NOT out for 2 weeks. So, in 2 weeks they could say he's out for another 10 days. At that point, he will need some games to remove the rust. During this entire time, we will be hopefully chasing a playoff spot.

With Buch possibly missing tonites game, I would give a long look to Gauthier in that spot. All he has done in 2 games is draw 2 penalities ( including a penalty shot! ) in just 13 mins total ice time. He has had a couple of practices now with the team to learn our system. Lets see if he can rise to the occasion and give him a shot.

I love that we unloaded Skjei w/o any retention. Getting a 1st round pick in a year that is considered to be a deep draft underscores how good Gorton can be as our GM. However, we now have a HUGE hole in our line-up on the left side of our defense. To think that Staal can simply slot up to 1st pairing is crazy. He doesn't have the foot speed to play 22+ mins a night and against other teams top players. Will be interesting to see if D'Angelo can fill that spot...

Playoff push ENGAGED!

speaking of Gauthier, I was talking to someone this morning on twitter about expansion draft protection

the way I see it now, 6 of the 7 forwards we are protecting are already known unless there is a trade:

Panarin
Kreider
Zibinajed
Buchnevich
Strome
Chytil

so that leaves a whole bunch of guys in the running next year for the 7th spot

Gauthier could be the front runner to be #7

I feel like, sometimes winning and pushing isnt always the best course of action, this might be one of those times. In the long run, it may benefit us to skip the playoffs to increase the value of the assets we have. I dont think a playoff push and wins for Georgi will appreciate his value as much as what a top 10 draft pick is worth. We gain so much more flexibility going into next year and what we can do.

I have a write up of my thoughts from yesterday, still working on it, maybe Ill post it if anyone cares to read it.

I know rust is a very real thing for even the most experienced tenders, but I'm not worried. He's played against top level talent for a number of years, I just think he will come back ready. I am worried on how long his injury will take to heal. I imagine though it'll be more of a comfort thing, ribs are a real b to deal with.

As much as I want to see Gaut moved up the lineup, I just don't want a repeat of Lemieux last year, where we moved him up in the lineup and he wasn't ready. It's hard to play a ton of minutes in the league. Maybe they wind up doing a bit of RW by committee tonight.

I like exactly what the Rangers did. They didn't give up on the playoffs (although maybe they weakened their hand by trading Skjei), but they still did what is best for the future of the team. The way I look at this year, hopefully it will be a fun couple of weeks, but we are playing with house money to a certain extent. If they make the playoffs, that would be awesome. If they don't, well, that was what was kind of expected and they are positioned well to develop into a long-term contender by what they have done over the last couple of years.

Next year, however, will be a year that I expect them to take a significant step forward.

the Skjei trade is fantastic, but the reality is that they gave the team they are chasing for that last playoff spot a defenseman capable of playing 20+ minutes a night and forced themselves to replace him with Brendan Smith or Libor Hajek

And I wouldn't change it for the world

I just don't think at this point though, we could lose enough to make it worth it in terms of draft position. I think being at least in the playoff hunt is a good experience for our young guys to experience high pressure situations before actually having a real playoff year.
