I did with a caveat. The wildcards/unknowns were Olofsson, Mittelstadt and Tage Thompson. If all three of them had big years, this team would be a playoff team. If not, this team was not going to be good. As it turned out, only one of them did.

None of those three play goal.

Put it this way. If Hutton had a 915 SV percentage he gives up 15 less goals this year. We are -17 in Goal differential this year. Simply change Hutton for a decent goalie, and we are in the Florida/Columbus/Calgary/Nashville range, teams that will either make it or just miss.

Now granted Hutton wasn't as bad last year, but on the flip side Ullmark was worse, so to go into any season you claim to want to be a playoff team with that duo is either really incompetent or dishonest.

He has zero work ethic issues, plays hard, practices hard, produces, says all the right things in the press, and makes his linemates into stars.

Here's a thought. Let's stop trying to figure our why our top 4 forwards aren't good enough to be six forwards, and then just get two more. I have a funny feeling that will help more than Eichel learning to be a better friend.

Eichel is a great friend to sam , seems like maybe something other than being a friend.

Like I said , after 9 years and no playoffs, I'd look at everything.

You focus on 2 top 6 forwards and turn a blind eye to everything else.

The funny thing is, Beane and McDermott have made some serious mistakes. Could have had Mahomes or Watson. Traded a fortune to go up and get Allen when they could have had Jackson for way less instead. Got peanuts for Watkins and Darius. The many gifted starts to Peterman.

They aren't some dream team of NFL guru's. But they have an organizational plan, a "this is how we want to play and win games" sort of thing, they aren't afraid to make trades and get their guys, and they are decent at evaluating talent, both their own and in general.

The sabres don' t need a genius Czar of Hockey to save them. You just need a guy who understands talent, makes more good moves than bad, and doesn't build his hopes on bad or unproven players having magical breakout seasons. That's it, there is no 10 years of drafting and restocking the minors, none of the bullpoop botts defenders make up. Just fire him and hire someone who will make like two smart fair trades over the summer, and maybe convince one B tier free agent to come here, and then make one or two smart signings of nobodies who actually end up being a nice piece. Boom. Playoffs.

I am not saying 'everything' can't be a factor, but this is a bit like trying to tell if you have a stomach ache while undergoing Chemotherapy.

I definitely know the reason I suck is because I have no good players. It's also technically possible that the ones I have are bumholes, just like I could have a stomach bug while I'm dying of cancer.

If I get a good team on paper, and still don't win, maybe I'll look at intangibles. But the reason they suck is very tangible right now, so why borrow trouble?

I will give them credit as being dishonest not incompetent. There is no way anyone who knows this sport thought this team was a playoff team. Their numbers for the previous year were soooo bad, and they changed almost no one. Pretty sure 2020/2021 is when they plan to try.
