Wow shocking that Wayne Simmonds didn’t come drag this team to the playoffs. This franchise needs a stick of dynamite

I'm only confused on the Simmonds trade. I haven't looked into it so maybe I can get a reason here. Why trade for Simmonds when there were no other significant trades done? Was there supposed to be one or two but they never got done? That would make sense.

The rumour is they were making a push for Josh Anderson and that Botterill tried to sign Simmonds in the summer.

At the cost of a 5th rounder it made fans happy, I don't particularly like the move either but it was a nothing move big picture.

You guys just can’t wrap your minds around the otherworldly genius moves of one Jason Botterill.

Apparently, he had an offer for Trochek that was better than Carolina's but Florida didn't want to trade him in-division, and he also tried to get Henrique from Anaheim and Johnson from Tampa.

I like the Simmonds trade on an island because he was a FA target for us this summer. If he likes it here and signs to a reasonable contract, I already love him and Skinner together. Get them a center and it will be a fun line.

That all makes sense. Hopefully the off season provides a bit more context.

Wasting this season from Eichel is purely on Botterill. If he gets another chance, he's an incredibly lucky man. Hope he realizes that and acts accordingly.

An offer Botterill liked better, not a better offer. And it didnt include Mittelstadt. It was a half assed attempt without Mitts being available

I think the biggest problem I’ve noticed with these tear it down re-builds is that in selling off everyone worth an ounce of value it leaves the roster empty when you want to compete again in the next 3-4 years.

He tried to trade for Josh Anderson just before the deadline... and Columbus saved him, since I read the other day that Anderson is likely out for the rest of the season. That would have been one more black eye on Botterill, trading for a guy who couldn't even dress the rest of the way. I just don't understand how he is going about constructing a "team" compared to an assembly of players on a roster. There is a difference between the two... or at least there is supposed to be anyways.

Hopefully, the offseason will bring hope. Cozens is going to be a good one, even if he isn't quite ready next season. I still believe Mittelstadt could become a good contributor. He reminds me of Tim Connolly, in terms of where he was with his development when traded to the Sabres… prior to the concussion, of course.

empty isn't a bad thing. The fewer bad value contracts you have the more flexibility you have to make the right moves.

If Botts acquired Anderson for minimal value while realizing his sadsack roster had no shot at the playoffs this year I would have been more impressed

He should be fired. Arguably worse than Murray was.

Sadly I agree .. when you Ignore the CHL for 2 years When they have the highest percentage of nhl players in the league

And you go 2 years straight with no number 2 center

I’m just saying if you already have that type of player why would you create a hole on your roster. I don’t like using Toronto for examples since I’m not a fan of them. But what I will say is that if Toronto sells of JVR, Bozak, and kadri for futures in the year they tanked for Matthews they either A: are bottom feeders in the time period that those players were with the team or B: have to sell off futures to replace those players anyways.

But can’t he see Botts’ plan and how good it is? Isn’t he excited about the 2020 first round draft pick?
