I mean, we have the worst penalty kill in the league, yet we keep trotting out Risto and McCabe every time. Last year they were also statistically our worst two penalty killers.

There was this 3 year (ish) window where the sabres had a real chance to be smarter than everyone else. Statistically, Risto was really bad. Eye test showed that at best he was a very flawed player. Yet he had a perception around the league as a great young player on a team friendly deal. For that period of time a trade could have been made that would have brought in talent this organization desperately needed.

The thing is, eventually the league caught up. Go into another team's board and suggest any trade with Risto in it. No one wants him. So now you might as well keep him as an average player on your below average team.

But two years ago, a real GM could have made that opportunity into something.

Funny you say this my co worker and I were talking about this yesterday. IF she did this Monday it would have been a completely different outcome. Warren/Sanders separate showed the outcome but lest be honest even if you give Sanders 60% of her votes he wins in a landslide.
