I'm sure Smith's comments about the Panthers got on the nerve of all their fan.

Funny enough, I was just watching some Hextall highlights the other night.

Couldn't give a poop about what Smith said. I see that as more of a shot at the owners and management (which have not grown the fanbase, annnd) that cast him aside after one bad season. That is where any lingering resentment in him would be directed. Tom Rowe & Co signed him to the extension after taking over after the division win and a quick playoff exit. Smith (in a year full of turmoil) had a terrible season for one with a five year/$25million extension about to kick in. After Gallant was fired, Rowe went behind the bench and even wound up publicly scapegoating Smith after a couple of games. I think there most likely was a lot more behind the scenes, too. Maybe it was best for him to move on after that all-around trainwreck of a season.
