Tyler Cameron: 10 Thoughts from 2010 Blackhawks Round 1
Now, with no other hockey news, let alone Blackhawks news to talk about, let's revisit the 2010 Blackhawks.
I have just completed the first 6 games of the Hawks run and they have just defeated Nashville in a tough series, 3 games to 2.
I will not be breaking down specific games or goals or plays, but rather players and overall thoughts.
Below are the first 10 things that came to my head immediately after watching these games.

Speed kills.
It was great when we were the youngest and fastest team in the league.
Good times. |

I echo your thoughts Tyler on the depth and quality of players on that team. I was thinking the same about the play of Bolland, Buff, Hammer, Sopel, Madden and Niemi while watching the games on NBCSports Chicago last month. And you didn't even mention the play of Toews or Kane in your write up.
My favorite play of the Nashville series? Has to be Hossa's OT winner in game 5 seconds after serving his 5 minute major which began late in the 3rd period. Of the players mentioned above, I think Bolland, Sopel and Hammer all played the puck leading up to Hoss' goal.
Spoiler alert. More great games and fantastic play in the upcoming series against Vancouver, San Jose and Philly.

With the AHL ending their season, what happens to NHL rosters if they don't cancel the NHL season? They would have to allow for some sort of expanded roster. With a 3 month break in the middle of the season, you'd have to think that players would be a little more prone to injury. Teams are going to need to have replacement players available, but with the AHL shut down, who do you call up? My guess is that they allow every team to have 5 or 6 players who can practice with the big team, but don't count against the cap, maybe 3F, 2D and 1G. |

I think when people talk about teams copying the Blackhawks model they often forget about how well-balanced that team was. They had the skill, speed and toughness that allowed them to beat their opponents no matter which way they wanted to play. |

I know, right?
Those guys were special and - along with Keith - really drove that team, so didn't feel the need to touch on them.
I was just so impressed and reminded how awesome their role players were. |

The Rat is still living rent free in the hearts and minds of Nuck fans. Hawks really need to find Bollard a position. |

The Hawks were so good in 2010 they only had to win 3 games to win the series.

Niemi? They won DESPITE him, not because of them. He was better than Leighton in the SCF, but that's not saying much. |

A bit of an overstatement from an understandably bitter Flyer fan. He was solid, for the most part, when they needed him most. I’d say the more accurate statement, is they won with him, but not because of him.
The truth is Philly was eternally lucky to even get as far as they did. They weren’t the best team in the east, not even close. |

Tyler, for Round 2, if you thought Bolland was good in the first round, he gets better and better every round on this playoff run. |

For sure. Think Philly was like a 7 or 8 seed that year, not that that always matters. They had a good forward group though not as deep as the Hawks, defense wasn’t as good and GT’ing and coaching definitely went to the Hawks.
I know it’s the playoffs and you just let them play, but Pronger was pretty much allowed to do whatever he wanted until like game 4 or 5 where he was whistled for his first minor IIRC.
Was at game 5 and made it all the sweeter when Buff unceremoniously put him on his backside in our corner. |

Good interview with Dennis Rasmussen on the Laz & Powers podcast today.
He's in Sweden. Said the players there are practicing on ice, so they may have an advantage over their North American brethren when and if hockey resumes. Practices with Kruger and sees Hammer occasionally.
Had very good things to say about Toews and all the vets, including Kane, taking care to ensure the new guys felt like part of the team and were mentored. Said the idea that the locker room was full of cliques and not cohesive was overblown - he felt like the team had a good bond, even in 2015-16 and 2016-17. Really liked Panarin (his roommate when he first came up)...spoke much better English than he let on. Really loved Q as a coach - said his yelling was as much positive as negative and that you never questioned whether his decisions on lineup and playing time were good ones, even if you weren't personally happy about them.
Wants to get back to NHL, but is already 29 - used to be prime age, but is it anymore? |

Actually, the owners will cry poor and that's the last thing they will want to do. |

Yup! Kind of forcing them there. Won't want to pay to carry a few extra AHL players and can't survive without them. |

Pronger got away with so much but the Hawks wore him down. |

Won't lie it'd be nice to see what Ian Mitchell has if they do some kind of mini season into playoffs |

Watching Sopel, so disciplined and understood best place to defend was in front of the goalie.

IIRC, the Flyers made the tournament with a shoot-out win in the last game of the regular season. |
