I don't think Vancouver and BC could have been as bad as New York. The infrastructure is completely different, from the amount of flights/travelers, to public transportation, to the sheer number of people (5 million in BC, 8.4 million in NYC alone), you guys are much more spread out. Plus, all the religious fanatics down here make things much harder!
That said, BC has done a tremendous job. The catch-22 is people will use the low numbers to argue that it wasn't as bad as it's been made out to be - NewYorkNuck
106,000 new cases over a 24 hour period globally a few days ago. Anyone thinking its not as bad as what it is due to their local low numbers is just so idiotic. I think there is only 1 new case on Vancouver Island in the last 13 days, which is just incredible, but the minute we downplay it and start going back to the old "normal" is when those numbers will rise again. |

I don't want to get into name calling.
My niece went to a clothing store today . Her comments was she forgot at times she was amid a covid crisis . I think people will forget once they start getting back in routines.
She asked the clerk about what happens when a person tries on clothing. The clerk resonded the clothing goes in isolation for two days which I thought was a total crock of sh1t. If that was true people would be shopping in empty stores. Not only that but what about when a person just touches something? There is no way they can be accountable for every touch.
I think all good intentions and practices will last a week or so. - VANTEL
I drove by Winners yesterday, about 50 people within 6 feet lined up outside. Unreal. |

A co-worker told me how his uncle, a fairly rich company owner, and a non-believer in the seriousness of Covid, had 2 of his workers infected with Covid, he then had to suit up in PPE and take his employees to his personal "quarantine" house, after he hired some people to totally disinfect the place and purchase 2 weeks supply of groceries.
He now knows how serious this virus can be. |

100%. Ontario had 400 new cases yesterday or the day before. That’s crazy considering what we’ve been doing to stop the spread. It just take one ‘super spreader’ event to create havoc.
One of the reasons my health authority isn’t even considering returning people back to offices. We’ve been told that we’ll continue to work from home for another 2-3 months at least.

Fraser Health got hit pretty hard. I think working from home for 2-3 months is a fantastic idea. I am hoping, that despite our low numbers on the Island, I can maintain working from home part time until we get a vaccine (wishful thinking I know)( |

PHSA won’t risk bringing back staff if the other health authorities don’t. That would create a lot of animosity amongst staff I would think. Not great for moral
How is your connections from home? Did it work out for you? How’s the productivity going? I’ll be honest, I love working from home... |

I'm liking our chances in the "play-in" preliminary round against Minnesota, they're an older team and we're a middle of the row team regarding age but our top guns are young guys with fresh legs.
I'm guessing if this does go through it'll be heavily watched as people are starving for some form of entertainment. Personally I'll pay attention to it but I'm not sure I'll watch as we're so busy outside with life right now. |

It took PHSA 3 months longer than the other HA's to get staff working remotely due to network and infrastructure capabilities. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if they ask us to come back earlier lol.
They upgraded everything for us to get us home. Remote access is fast and reliable and productivity is better at home tbh. At the office, I share a building with a long term care facility, where housekeeping was going back and forth between, so my productivity at home was much better just not having to worry about anything. |

I'm starved for socialising not a few more months in front of the TV. I find it fascinating that the NHL is trying to be the only business in the world not affected by the pandemic. MONEY. |

When I was laid off from my old job, I used my CERB payments to buy a soldering and desoldering gun, hot air rework station and decided to repair and refurb old retro consoles and computers for people who wanted to ship them to me and I'd ship them back. I've made 10x the money I did working retail doing that. Plus it's given me time to do things I always wanted to, like draw and start writing a book. I'm basically never going out of the house again even when things are 'normal' again because I'm better off that way. |

i honestly love working from home so I totally get what you are saying. My home "office" is separated by a floor and 2 doors, so i get good separation from the kids and dog, but being able to visit with them on my coffee and lunch breaks is just awesome. Good for you for finding that happiness man, that's awesome to hear. |

I get that, personally my golf is giving me tons of socialization so I'm not "starving" for it. We've also had other couples come over in our backyard, at a safe distance from each other, so again things are somewhat normal for us. |

I think a lot of people are going to be like me. Remember how people were always complaining about never having enough time for family because of work/having to commute and the like? Even though there's been a predictable uptick in domestic violence due to people being stuck together, I'd love for some research into how the quarantine might have actually saved more relationships and marriages due to being able to be at home all the time. I also wonder at the corrolation between quarantine and the number of pregnancies too. Will we call everyone born during/after the quarantine Generation Baby Boomer 2? |

I remember seeing a video or interview with Benning about Hughes, saying he went to his place and chatted with him and his parents before the draft saying that if for some reason he fell in the draft, he wouldn't be making it past Vancouver. Benning was all in on Hughes from day one, just didn't think he'd get there.
So ya, that definitely makes me question that list too. And if I remember correctly, wasn't is Gradin who was really gunning for Petey all of that year? - NewYorkNuck
Pretty typical for Vancouver media . All the blame falls at Bennings doorstep , all the glory gets handed out to everyone else. |

I honestly dont see a single difference. The most likely way of contracting covid has always and will always be person to person droplets. - Codes1087
When I read the news article I literally said (out loud) “there is literally nothing new here”. |

Its honestly one or the most selfish and entitled takes people can have regarding covid19. It makes me want to puke. - Codes1087
It is because of the excellent job that BC front line workers and front office did that put peoples thinking at ease.
If there was more damage people would have respected it more. You are not going to frighten people with 6000 deaths country wide and 5000 of them in their 70's and 80s .
You guys did excellent work and along with that will follow the inbred attitude I am above the virus.
My wife and I go out nightly at 7 and bang the pots to say thank you. |

How should it have been handled? - Marwood
This is just me thinking out loud, but I think they could probably have shut things down for a shorter period of time, with a lot of resources going into prevention discussion and implementation. For example, in restaurant dining could have been restarted after three or four weeks with the same strict standards that are in place now if they had started creating the guidelines right away (or better yet, industry should already have had many of them in place or at the ready...)
Hopefully the more devastating wave two this fall yields more positive response by citizens. |

I bet liquor has more to do with domestic violence than being in the same room. |

i know a ton of people think the whole pot banging thing is stupid and think health care employee's don't really care. I can ensure everyone, that any little bit of moral support that you can give any front-line healthcare worker will go an extremely long way. |

I don't think people were ready to go out to restaurants 3 or 4 weeks after this started. Most people are nervous going out now and a lot say they won't be comfortable until there is a vaccine. The only thing I think they should have done better was to close the border sooner and restricted travelling sooner. |
