I think you failed to mention the biggest thing supporting Chiasson's claim to a roster spot. In 395 mins away from all of McDavid, Drai and Nuge, Chiasson posted a 5-on-5 goal share of 58.8% (10-7) while pulling even in virtually every other measure (CF, SCF, HDCF, xGF). Even if you remove the late season heater he had alongside Neal and Khaira (4-0 in 115 mins), he was still 50% (5-5) in 257 mins with Haas.
While his actual 5-on-5 offensive production was a paltry 0.87 pts/60, he didn't let that stop him from being effective when down the line-up.

A useful player, just too bad they overpaid him based on his prior year. A 1.5 mil salary would be just fine.
