I would like to know your opinion on next year Carol. Do you believe there will be a 2020-21 season?
I ask because by the time next season was suppose to start we will be finishing off last year. Then add on a three month break it will bring us to January . Then the NHL has to plan a whole year of scheduling around a pandemic to arenas with no fans and hundreds of millions of lost revenues. Then to add to it they need to cram 9 months of regular season and playoffs into 5 -6 months .
I would like to hear your thoughts on next year. |

If the KHL stays on track & starts & finishes their season as usual & the NHL starts next season on Jan 1 as expected then Vasily Podkolzin would be free to join the #Canucks on May 1 with lots of games left in the regular season and with a chance to make a playoffs impact. Thinking face |

The league has been comfortable for awhile with the idea of starting on Jan 1 - Bettman made a reference to possibly kicking off the season with the Winter Classic.
I believe the thinking is that they push back next season as far as possible to try to stay out of the way of the Second Wave and give themselves the best crack at putting fans back in seats by then. There has also been talk that maybe they'd bump the calendar back somewhat permanently - US teams have always hated fall games; they have a tough time drawing during football/college football season.
I listened to Tim Leiweke on a podcast yesterday and while he seems like quite a realist in that we won't be able to eliminate the virus, only control it, he also seems very bullish on the idea that there will be ways to get fans back in arenas before long - and arenas are his business. He has a little more runway, of course, since NHL Seattle won't have to be ready until the beginning of 2021-22 (whenever that might be).
Given how the rise of infections in the US has not exactly affirmed that the sports leagues got it right when they started booking their return-to-play plans for July, I don't feel super-confident about the modelling that has been done for the second wave and whatever else is still to come. But I'm no scientist.
So — I have no idea. At this point, I'm dealing with enough uncertainty just wondering whether or not they'll get this CBA agreement ratified by the players!

Yeah it has been a big wait and see. We can speculate but I don't think anyone at this point has answers.
I can see a permanent new start to Jan 1 . I am not sure I like it but mostly because it is a new idea. That would mean the entire summer is playoffs going right through to September. Summer TV sucks so it might be a welcome addition but I can see a lot of people going out instead of being stuck home watching hockey.
Also with 445 million being paid out already in bonuses and the 30% wage loss next year with escrow and deferring salaries it might be easier for owners to say forget January we will see you next September.
I have a feeling the 2021 season will be a super series about 6 weeks long and try to recoup some losses. |

Don't forget about the importance of that new US TV deal.
The league is going to do everything in its power to have a strong 2021-22 season so that it can attract multiple suitors - and probably desperately still wants to play 82 games. There was talk that they were hoping to split the US rights to multiple networks and hopefully get ESPN/ABC back in the mix as well as NBC.
I wonder what they're using as their guesstimate for the value of that deal. That money is the main reason why they think they'll be able to play back that 10% deferral at a lower escrow number a few yeas down the road.

TV Networks might be cautious about a big deal. Advertising dollars might be down. I read today 1200 Pizza Hut and 400 Wendy's are filing for bankruptcy. I think car sales had their worse year since the depression .
Good to know though US has sold 8 million guns since March for their highest quarter ever.
We might be seeing new Colt 45 ads from beers to pistols. |

Alabama, not surprising at all.

To use the sports cliche, the folks at the league can't worry about those things, which are out of their control. All they can do is try to package up the most attractive product possible. |

Congratulations to Edm/Tor, good luck.
Fauci said he wouldn’t be surprised to see the US reach 100k new cases per day, I’d give them a week to 10 days to get there. Looks like Canada could drop out of the top 20 in that same time |

True enough .
I have seen some live TV without audiences it is a real hit or miss. I think late night talk shows are suffering but I like Tim and Sid.
I think hockey without fans could work for entertainment but I do wonder about football seeing the actual play time is about 15 minutes.
Time will tell. |
