I love Trotz’s focus on defense first- thats a great foundation but to really compete as a cup contender you have to have a “one-two” punch offensively. Meaning simply having two forwards who will eclipse the 80-point mark and one of them possibly/potentially flirting with the 100-point strata. Barzal & JT were the only two I think recently who both barely eclipsed 80pts in a season. And I dont think this team had both better-than- average offense AND defense anytime this century.

Look at the teams who have been “regulars” to conference & cup finals in recent years: Pens, Bruins, Caps, Tampa....they all had a version of “superstar #1 & #1A. We need a “#22 & #19” again to have a realistic chance of being regular contenders.

The team is getting the new arena and we have legit owners and a fantastic coach and a solid D-Corp. Cap issues be-damned, this coming off season is huge in terms of the what happens for the next 6-8-10 yrs.

That said....bring on the Panthers. They looked wholly unimpressive vs Tampa.

Mayfield lead all Dmen with TOI and Pelech was 2nd. Barry must have thought Mayfield was on his game?

I thought the Isles as a team played well defensively. Panarin who as a Ranger killed the Isles this year was on the ice for 22 + minutes and didn't have a shot on net.

I really don’t think the islanders defense had much to do with panarin not having a shot on goal in 22 minutes I do think it’s more about the fact that he signed with the rangers for less money. Still stings doesn’t it!

Even with pags, I don't think the Isles have what it takes to go deep. The problem is, they aren't bad enough to lose against the Panther team I saw yesterday. Too bad, because it may be better to lose and have a shot at LaF and do a bit of a rebuild.
