Defense wins championships. I think you certainly have the assets to trade up front for some grit and D men which you guys desperately need. - nyisles7
You need major upfront talent to go along with it.

Probably right. Point being the Leafs need to be prepared to lose anyone not named Matthews to get some top D talent. - iTOLDu
Agreed and will add Tavares to that
Otherwise all options on the table

why not
he loves to toss them away - Mr_Smokey
He traded one to get Muzzin. And another to get rid of Marleau’s contract. But ok, “toss them away.” lol |

Him or Marner should go first IMO.
Trading one them could change the whole make up of this team and get us out of CAP issues.
(BTW, I like Tavares but didn't like when he got the C and wouldn't be sad if he wasn't here. Not the captain this team deserves.) |

How did they have to? Out of hundreds of possible trade scenarios with likely 2 dozen teams that was the only one... expand yours minds guys - Mr_Smokey
You think Dubas wanted to trade a 1st to rid himself of that albatross contract? If you don't think they explored every possible scenario with every possible team, you're crazy.
The Leafs were behind the 8-ball with Marleau's contract and the entire league knew it. Don't forget that he had a full NMC that surely made things even more difficult. |

Keefe got schooled by Torts tonight. The "Super" line all game? Played right into Torts' strength. He just played Werenski-Jones against them, and then dominated the other lines. - fifty__missions
I thought at some point we would see Clifford with a couple of the big boys for a shift or 2 but I guess that’s too old school |

Taveres is one of the only Leafs that gives it his all every night. You can tell he cares. He gets my respect for sure. - PlatosRepucklic
Oh, I'm not saying JT doesn't try. For whatever reason, he just doesn't play good 2-way hockey. We had different theories when he was on the Island. He's never been a great skater. He also may have developed poor habits from lousy NHL coaching who simply never demanded that he play 2-way hockey. |

He had to trade 1st to get away from a brutal contact so he could sign the young guys. - burn
if he had a shred of negotiating ability, he would have been able to get atleast 1 o 2 of his forwards signed for under 10 mil, meaning he wouldn't have had to give up a (frank)ing 1st rd pick in order to dump a contract. that's TERRIBLE asset and contract management by Dubas |

And he made the organization look like total (frank)ing fools with the “A” thing. How embarrassing that he wears a letter after that performance. The team is Matthews’. Give the C to him and let JT and MR flank A’s. Embarassing when I keep thinking about it. |

I distinctly remember the Penguins winning a Cup with an AHL-calibre d-corps.
Teams need balance and great goaltending. The myth that one aspect of the game "wins championships" is reductive AF. |

Could he improve? Maybe
