Nice write-up!
And thanks again for asking my thoughts. The experience was rewarding and humbling at the same time. I can't wait til Draft day when we will have something real on the Wings to discuss! (Unless they hire another coach before that ) |

So why is Carolina giving away Fleury for 2 guys that seem like fringe NHL players at best? Sorry, Svech and Cholowski have very little trade value.
Why would both Palat and Johnson waive their NTCs to come to Detroit...no chance to win, worse weather, worse lifestyle. Not happening.

Carolina already has Hamilton, Slavin, Skjei, Gardiner, Pesce, and Bean.
Tampa has to move somebody and Yzerman provides familiarity.
So in other words eat a bag of Richards. |

Haha. Ok dude. Just because Carolina likely trades a d-man, this doesn't mean they are give one away for peanuts. And just because Tampa has to move somebody, it doesn't mean they can convince two veterans to waive NTCs to play out the rest of their contracts in a losing environment. I'm just offering some realism to your ideas. |

They miss Stevie? I would love for this to happen, but their loyalty to Stevie and a lure to more ice time would be all they would gain in Detroit. Whereas they would lose out on (maybe) multiple cup runs.......

Hey guys, I’m fascinated with this. Carolina did just get “outed”. That team has a lot going for them and are so young. Fleury is RFA and 3 Dmen are UFA Edmunson, Vatinen and TVR. I do think CAR wants to get Svech boys together. I need to chew on this a bit.
Tyler Johnson may well waive to come to Detroit. I know he wants to win, but the cap has his options limited. I don’t think Palat would come. TJ seems to be a name that pops up though. IF TB won it all this year, would be easier in some ways. I wouldn’t count Johnson out at all. Palat, man, I just don’t know that he’d do it at all |

I definitely think Tyler Johnson coming here is realistic. Something has to give with Tampa's Cap. Re-signing Sergachev and Cirelli is their top priority. Flat Cap means not every player can stay and enjoy the sunshine and no State tax. Yzerman has a boat load of cap space and he'll be getting lots of phone calls from GM's whose teams are up against the Cap.
Yzerman drafted Tyler Johnson and Palat for that matter. He believed in him. Players don't ever forget that. There's definitely a connection there. Detroit needs a second line center to bridge the gap until Veleno is ready. Plus Larkin needs some help shouldering the center load. If Filppula is this teams 2C again I'll poke my eyes out with a fork. Johnson isn't young but he's not too old either. He's the perfect stop Gap 2C for Detroit over the next few years until they're relevant again.
I prefer Fabbri to play on the wing. Palat would be a nice bonus but I'm not expecting it. But Tyler Johnson makes total sense to me. I don't think the price to acquire him would be very high to be honest. It's called leverage. Yzerman has it and he'll take advantage of it.
Also GM's tend to make trades with other GMs they know and trust. Yzerman has this with Brisebois. There's a connection here. Just like with Yzerman and Holland. We already saw Yzerman and Brisebois make the Adam Erne trade. Heck we recently saw Yzerman and Holland make 2 trades at the trade deadline. AA and Mike Green. Yzerman knows Tyler Johnson very well. There's no question in my mind he's a prime off season target.
Let's say Tampa wins the Cup. Of course Johnson would want to stay and compete for more Cups. But if it's me, I want to be on a team who wants me. Sure I could be stubborn and refuse to waive my no trade clause and stay. But personally, I wouldn't want to remain on a team who wants me gone.
In a perfect world, Brisebois would rather keep Johnson. Having him in Tampa is great insurance for the often injured Stamkos. But winning comes with a price in a Salary Cap world. Johnson and Brisebois both know this and so does Yzerman. |

Nicely put G. I tend to agree that TJ is a very real possibility. Fabbri, agreed, better on wing. We need a legit center man and TJ never quits. Love that kid |

You forgot that they would lose money from taxes by getting traded to Detroit. TJ still has almost 18 million left of salary on his contract and going from no state taxes to Detroit, i would imagine he stands to lose a decent chunk of change by allowing himself to be traded to the Wings. With a full NTC, i'm not sure he would want to do that when he can pick and choose where he wants to go or if he even wants to go at all. I don't think most players in that situation would want to take that pay cut to go to a worst team with no chance of winning a cup anytime soon. Only players that would want to do that are players looking for a bigger role hoping to end up with a better contract down the line. |

The difference of FLA to MI isn’t nearly as big as to a Canadian team. Most players put blocks on Canadian teams for that reason. There will be a difference, for sure. The belief in Yzerman will make a difference. |

When you put everything together (warm place, less taxes and a good team), i have a hard time believing that Yzerman can convince TJ that Detroit is a better place for him over lets say as an example the Rangers who are said they might be looking for a 2nd line center.
Besides if the Wings draft one of Byfield/Stutzle (if they fall to them) or Rossi, they won't need TJ and that contract most likely. They might in the short term until they can play in the NHL but after that it would be overkill to have a 5 million 3rd line center.

I respect where you’re coming from, I just disagree on this point. TJ would be at least a 2c for Detroit for a while. No worries, we’ll see how it shakes out. |

With all due respect, and you've certainly brought respect back to the Wings blog on this site, your trade proposals don't make a lot of sense for the other side. There's nothing that a contending team wants from this roster other than cap space, and the wings shouldn't be using it to ice a competitive team in the next couple years. The wings don't need Matt Murray, or Kyle Turris (who is an overpaid but necessary insurance policy for a team with championship ambitions), they need the Victor Rasks, Jordie Benns and top 50 picks. They need to leverage their cap space not with guys who will be here in 5 years when the team is competitve, but instead on guys with expiring contracts they can flip again at next years' deadline. That's how you rebuild. It takes time, and trying to cut the line only ends up extending it in the end. |

Thanks so much for the compliments! I love this board and this group.
I completely respect where you’re coming from. It would take a lot of “ifs” for many of these trade proposals to work. Turris is probably on his way out, not necessarily to Motown. Poile gives a lot of leash but the team as a whole is going to get a good “dressing down”.
I do also like your shorter term solutions in Rask and Benn. Very well thought out and I think you’re on the right track. Keep reading and keep sharing! Love the headspace |
