I used to think that 27 & 29 were Selanne and Kariya version 2.0. After watching them play together for the last few years, I think they play better when apart. Ehlers scores his first 2 playoff goals this year, which was also the first time he was not with Laine. Coincidence?

Don't really see the entertainment value in 29. All he does is stay static in one power play spot and shoot. For a guy his size, he should be plowing over opponents, be hard to take off the puck and be absolutely dominant. Does he do any of that? I haven't seen any of it. Will he ever have it? Can't say. Loved Laine the day he was drafted and especially after he said he was going to make the Leads regret not taking him. Thought he would score more goals than Mathews. That hasn't happened either.

In all honesty, Laine should watch video of Mathieau Perreault and Brandon Tanev this off season. He should also train with both. If he had their tenacity and aggression on the forcheck, he would not need anyone to play with him as he would be the main driver of his own line. He would easily be the most dominant forward in the Western Conference if he did that!

However, I don't foresee him doing that. He will always be a "could have been". And, that is why I trade him for the best package I can get!

I don't care if they play with each other, I just enjoy watching them both play.

Did you not see Laine throwing his weight around this season? He's the closest thing this soft team of runts has for a power forward.

Well for a guy his size, he's pretty easy to take off the puck!

Wow this is such a Winnipeg take, love the hard working plug players and want to ship out the talented guy for whatever one can get for him, that's a quick way to become a "could have been" team.

That could have been player as you call him is a perennial 30 goal scorer and was almost a point a game player this season and he's 22 or 23, I think he's doing okay.

I actually wonder if you watch the games. You clearly have no concept of quality of competition. Myers does make big gaffs at times mostly due to the fact of his size and yet you say nothing of the gaffs that Trouba and Byfuglien made, which they made lots of.

You bash Connor on his defensive play and make no mention of how Laine leads this team in giveaways. You bash Myers and take no note of the competition he's up against. He was top 5 in minutes played on the Jets in 2017-18 in the playoffs. The same ones we went to the conference in.

Also you refuse to answer questions and defend players you like based on nothing but the fact you like them. I used to think you were an analytics guy, that is clearly not the case.

- TheUltimateJet

A: that’s because Byfuglien and Trouba we’re both considerably better in all facets of the game than Myers was. Myers was rarely good, and the other two were rarely bad.
B: Laine’s giveaways are largely a product of him having the puck a lot. Especially this year. He basically had to drive his own line in all 3 zones at times. I give Laine a pass because he works hard, and is usually where he should be, but the long stick and lack of acceleration don’t help him.
Connor likes his fly bys, and is constantly out of position.
Also, quality of completion really doesn’t amount to much. It levels out over the course of a season for most players. Myers was never a specialist like Hjalmarsson or any other defensive player, so his minutes are pretty random at 5v5.

He may have had the 2nd highest war amongst Jets blueliners but is he a Gwar fan? I think we need to know that before we sign him!

Seriously though yeah he could maybe be a 2nd pair RHD with a better partner but then what do you do with Pionk, he and Morrissey might work in the regular season but I don't think they'd last in the playoffs and they need a RHD that can quarterback the powerplay better then Pionk but DeMelo isn't that guy, this defense is such a mess!.

- JetFuel

He was more than holding his own on the top pairing in Ottawa. He improved that team dramatically whenever he was out there. 2nd pairing is his low end.
As for Pionk, the further down the lineup you can hide him, the better. Heinola is a perfect partner for him because he slows things down, and makes it simple. The playoffs showed how exposed Pionk is when he’s forced to think fast

It’s a super Winnipeg take. Ultimate is acting like it’s an issue of character. Laine literally did drive his own line. He was first in on the forecheck, and first guy back on D. This is a problem with the system and his linemates, not him. Laine struggles to stay on the puck because he can’t get rolling as fast as Ehlers, and that won’t change. He needs momentum to be effective. When he’s first man in, as he usually is nowadays, it forces him to stop up and fight along walls. He should be watching Jagr, not Tanev and Perreault

A perennial 30 goal scorer that some sucker would pay a 50 goal price for. Stock market always dictates that you sell high! I think Jets fans would have learned from the Trouba situation.

Not really a Winnipeg take. Ovechkin does all the above!

Well Laine was quoted as saying that he would not be good in this year's playoffs. I think he speaks for his own character well.

He should be training like Jagr as well. Jagr used to skate with chains wrapped around him after games finished. The guy was a freak of nature.

Oh yes cause Ovechkin was the complete package from the day he entered the league, everyone was saying that.

Complete Winnipeg take, Laine is a different style of player, not everyone plays the game the same way and if they did a team wouldn't be successful. Majority of Winnipeg fans love plug players and if you don't look like you're digging away in the corner like a good grinder then golly gee we gotta send this guy off in a trade cause he just doesn't work hard enough like that Tanev guy, don't care that he scores 30+ goals a year, he just doesn't look like he's working hard enough to get them so get him gone!

You forgot to mention how he was quoted as saying he would not play well in the playoffs. I think that speaks for itself.

You have the Winnipeg take that no matter what we trade Laine for we are going to lose that trade.

Edit: I am glad that I do have the Winnipeg take. I love this city and am proud of being from here!

I’ve been quoted as saying I can land a plane on a bigger plane while they’re both flying. Doesn’t mean I’m disrespecting the skill of real pilots or even close to serious

In our conference? I left out Pietrangelo, Parayko, and Ekholm. Those are the only high level tall boys I can think of.

As for Dallas and Vegas, no, I don’t.
Klingberg carries Lindell, and Oleksiak is good because of his reach and strong positioning.
The top 2 defencemen for Vegas are also smaller, more agile players. Theodore and Schmidt are both under 200lbs.

Size isn’t useful if they don’t know what to do with it. Being big and strong is an input, and preventing goals is an output. If you have to players with identical stats, and one is 5”10 170, while the other is 6’3” 220... they are the same level of player. Big man is not better because he’s big. The best player the Jets have ever had when it came to preventing shots in the slot was Toby Enstrom, not Buff or Myers or Trouba or or or

- Rexypoo

I never meant size as tall only, I don’t care how big you are but you need guys who can move the puck and be tough!!! And by the way Smidt is 6.1 and 195. He does both jobs, I like that.
Yes Enstrom prevented shots, not debating that, but he also allowed a lot of goals when the puck was stuck in our zone and he got man handled As a result, later in his career when he lost a step he frequently gave up the corner first. Goals against hurt more than shots that don’t go in.

Except for Dallas, Vegas, and those two Pittsburgh Cup wins a few years ago.
- Rexypoo

This is wrong in so many levels.
Again!!!! It’s not just height and weight!!! You have to be able to win battles down low to be able to move the puck out. Strength and skill is always, always better than just skill.

Enstrom was the most effective defensive player in the NHL during his last season. The Toby-Buff pairing was top 3 defensively.

And yet he couldn’t stay healthy anymore, why you ask, cause he was tiny and chose to go back to a less contact, less hitting league to live out his years.

Read an article in shots in hockey; here’s a snipit

But, if you take a closer look, the support falters. Teams that outshot their opponents won 580 games in the season. How many games did the outshot teams win? 588! More teams had a higher winning percentage when they were behind on shots (19) than when they were ahead (11). And a team’s winning percentage didn’t change by much whether it outshot or it was outshot by opponents — about 8% on average. If outshooting opponents is pivotal to winning games, we’d expect this difference to be wider. Instead, we see that a team’s ability to win games was fairly independent of its ability to outshoot opponents.

That’s pretty average, if you look at the 6 they’re actually running. Their top 3 are the smaller ones
