Even that, though, appears to be constrained by the maximum year over year variation, which is not allowed to exceed the minimum year salary + bonus, and which is also restricted for any one player to be not more than a fixed % of the team’s cap (18%?) based on the year it is signed.

there are lawyers and capologists to work thru & around these restrictions...though I’m doubtful whether a movement penalty clause or very large mid-loading of a contract is doable within this CBA.

Having said that...creative approach! It certainly would work in some pro leagues, like the NBA.

They found a way to loophole contracts before and then Bettman gets his revenge by making a cap recapture retroactive penalty in the following CBA. If Teams and Agents try to get creative because of Covid market and Flat Cap pressures plus expansion draft; then, those contracts will be protected at least for 5 years with this new one.

But it’s their competitive drive that separates them from the rest of us. I don’t think that drive goes away easily. Even with age and success.
