EM got lucky by receiving 28M from the Seattle expansion fee that was used to buy out Bobby ryan. If the 28m expansion fee was not granted this year I wonder if EM would have done this move. Each team was awarded 28M from Seattle expansion fee that could be used to buy out players and other expenses but cannot be used towards tge cap. People have stated some owners pocket that money or use it to manage their rosters. So I think it was a perfect timing to use that money - SENS-sational
It's really pretty simple math... no buyout would have cost Melnyk $7.5M this year, and a total of $15.0M over the next 2 years. The buyout costs him $1.8M this year, and a total of $7.2M over the next 4 years. Not only does he save $5.7M this year and $7.8M overall, but the overall cost is amortized over 4 years, with negligable Cap implications. It's possible that the Seattle expansion money helped make it even more of a no-brainer, but I'm virtually positive they would have bought Bobby Ryan out, regardless.
Honestly, people are acting all shocked... as if the desire to move Ryan out is coming out of the blue. Anyone else remember how badly the Karlsson trade negotiations were impacted by the attempt to make teams take Ryan's contract as well? That was literally 2 years ago, now. The situation has just finally reached a point where it's financially reasonable to execute a buyout, and sure enough it's exactly what they're doing. |

I think people are shocked because the team isn't competing, so why the need to buy him out, since they need to reach the floor regardless.
Side question, the sens save "real money" on this deal. Does that mean Bobby doesn't get the money that isn't payed out. Or is insurance?

reading Sens twitter is starting to get ridiculous......fans on there are COMPLETELY incapable of looking at anything rationally and objectively. i understand that Melnyk and his stupidity has been hard on the fans....but people on there are absolutely freaking out about losing Boro, Ryan and Andy.
like holy (frank), it's a 4th line winger, and bottom pairing (arguably #7 dman on a good team), and a 40 year old back up goalie.....who combined to make like 12 mil last year............and people are acting like we just let Tkachuk and Chabot go. i get that they were in Ottawa for a long time, but holy (frank), let go man.
all three of those moves were good hockey moves, but people can't seem to pull their heads out of their asses and look past the "melnyk" of everything to see when moves make sense. |

this buy out happened for 2 reasons:
1. there's a bit of saved money (not much) but it's paid out over 4 years rather than 2
and more importantly
2. they get Ryan's NMC clause contract off the books so it doesn't have to be protected in the expansion draft, exposing and losing a younger, better, cheaper player.
i cant' stress enough how important and overlooked number 2 is |

100% agree I was doing backflips when I heard boro wasnt going to be extended and anderson. I agree with all the business side of the moves and I like anderson character but hes just too old for team. Hockey moves fast if u dont make the right and timed decision for ur roster I feel it can ruin the team for years. Sens still have alot of garbage players to push out or trade.
Out:
Anderson
Boro
Boedker (signed overseas)
Sabourin
Hainsey ( he better go)
Needs to be traded:
Zaitsev
Anisimov
Tierney
Hawryluk
I would like sens to actually deal anismov now then at trade deadline which they are gonna have to and receive a pick for a contender playoff team anyways. Let it go now opens more spots for logan brown, norris, batherson. But I'm sure batherson is on our roster this season. |

Where's the veteran leadership. You can't have a all kids in the lineup. That's a recipe for disaster. |

There’s lots of vets......Anisimov, brown, tierney, duclair, zaitsev......your vets don’t have to be old useless guys. A good 26-27 year old is fine with me |

I admittedly haven't looked recently (and am travelling so can't look immediately right now), but if I recall correctly Laine's shooting impact, which is elite-level positive, is offset by some fairly underwhelming numbers elsewhere in his game to a significant extent. I'd rather keep fifth, both for short-term cost certainty and the hope that we end up with a better player.
On JP, the Oilers' handling of him leaves a lot to be desired. - Michael_Stuart
This year he made significant strides in his defensive game. Again, only 22, same age as Puljujarvi.
Sure, there’s hope that the 5th overall could be better, but I’m more willing to trade for the proven player, throw in that he’s a top line scoring winger..and you have someone, who you try to draft. Laine would give this team a definitive game breaker.
And it would make the leafs/sens rivalry even better with Matthews vs Laine.

id trade for laine would be awesome to have him acquainted with lassi Thomson i think that would spark an insane duo.

It's equally foolish to judge these moves without seeing anything beyond the immediate loss. I wonder if those same people will be complaining if these moves help bring in a far more useful veteran player, create more ice time for key young players like Batherson, Hogberg, and Brannstrom, or helps secure a proactive long-term extension for Brady Tkachuk in the coming off-season to avoid RFA offer sheets next year. Seriously, people need to have some priorities, and moves like that look a whole lot more like what a rebuilding team should be doing, than wasting money on a 39yo goaltender and a pair of fringe UFA players on the wrong side of their best years. Not to mention that it really could be a far more positive thing for Ryan to have a chance to contribute to a contending team, as opposed to being locked in an untradable contract on a rebuilding team where legitimate contention will be beyond the remaining term of his deal.

they'll never see it that way. their hatred for Melnyk is so absolute (which i understand) that every move this team makes is just a bad move with the ulterior motive of just being cheap.
like, i get the hate for Melnyk, i feel it as much as anyone......but the complete lack of objectivity is insane |

i was reading something about Laine the other day.....can't remember who wrote it.
basically it was talking about how he is a really good goal scorer, but when he's not scoring, he is an absolute liability on the ice. one of the worst players in the league in his own end. he basically has a great shot, and that's about it
i wouldn't hate that so much if i knew the cost to trade for him wouldn't be insanely ridiculous, and then the cost to re-sign him in a year might be worse.
the last thing a rebuilding team on a budget needs is an insanely overpaid player who is RIDICULOUSLY one-dimensional.
there are TONS of players who we could acquire with that #5 pick who would be waaaayyyy better for this team moving forward. |

Well at least we don’t have to hear you female doging about the coach every post now, you have another ridiculous point to complain about now.
you're the EXACT kind of fan i was talking about earlier.....no matter what this team does, you're incapable of being objective. you just look for the next thing to cry about and then beat it to death with stupid takes. |

ugh, just announced that Justin Barron is out indefinitely because of further blood clots.
i've been pumping that guy for 2 years, easily has the talent to be a top 10 pick.........that (frank)ing sucks for him, he's gonna drop like crazy

So, how far will he drop?
Is that something where he'd be attractive with one of the two third rounders, or even reach with the Dallas 2nd? |

I’d be happy if they took the chance on him in the 2nd. Kid has top 10 talent.....just those injuries. Seems like a low risk, huge potential return as a late 2nd rd pick |

Not a surprise, aside from timing. Eugene Melnyck was in a financial bind (as far as NHL owners go) for a while now. He’s cleverly navigated the rules, hitting the cap floor while actually spending significantly less than the cap floor to pay his on-ice product. One year was around $15M below with LTIR, insurance, etc. Now with the flu and lost revenue as a result, he’s even more behind the 8-ball. Is he going after Taylor Hall? Hahaha. No! He’s going to trade for someone who won’t cost him any actual money. Bryan Little May never play again? Make him a Senator. Nolan Patrick struggling with migraine disorder, bring him to Ottawa. Steven Stamkos just reinjured himself in a goal celebration, and needs another core muscle surgery... may never play again? He’d probably like it in the Nation’s Capital.
*Disclaimer: the Stamkos thing is not fact*
Melnyck is broke, he can’t afford to own this team. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.

This year Laine actually improved his 2 way game. His first few seasons, I would say were one dimensional (like any player entering the league), but he’s just 22 years old!
And if the cost was the #5 overall, how would that NOT be a steal for the Sens?
In terms of contract..you gotta pay your best players and hope you could reach a fair deal. Maybe a flat salary plays a factor in terms of cost going down?
Side note, I would also take a shot at Pul, but between the two? Crazy not to go after Laine

This post is excellent, Melynk is in serious financial trouble after getting kicked out of Bioval and then forking out millions on an expensive divorce. He lost his horse breeding / racing farm that was worth millions and has become the poorest owner in the league. He most likely will have no choice but to take over injured players contracts to reach the cap floor. Not that this is bad as there will be no gate sales due to Covid. They still may hit a home run due to a one On I
Ibnehof the draft picks coming their way for taking on a bad but inexpensive contract And the Sens are still 2-3 years away from competing In the playoffs. The worry if you are a Senator fan is. Does Eugene have the cash to sign his young stars to long term contracts!
